The 980x is pointless for gaming.

If you need a 980x, you're probably in a workstation environment or you just have way too much money.

The 2500k and 2600k are identical for gaming as well.

2600k will actually probably give you slightly more FPS because games are mostly optimized for dual/quad core. You won't need a 980x unless your in a workstation environment.

The 980 is raw computing power with video and 3d. Pointless for gaming... I don't know about that. I'd have to see another rig with Witcher 2 wide open to judge.

No, 980x, 990x will only pull ahead of sandy bridge cpus when using applications that use all of the available cores/threads or when overclocking with extreme cooling (which isn't for 24/7).
If you're primarily a gamer 2500k or 2600k is the way to go. If you are using heavy multithreaded apps & time is money the 980x will be better, or if you're a benchmarking junkie & like to play with extreme cooling the 1366 EE cpus are more fun.

clock for clock the cores in the 980X are slower than the 2600k
in games the 2600k will beat the 980X/990X because of this

"k" means the multiplier is unlocked and you can overclock it.

The 2600k has an unlocked multiplier and the 2600 does not. Do not get the 2600 unless you don't want to overclock.
