If someone really wants to spend $1000 on a chip it's either for bragging rights or because it's optimized for an application they can't live without.

That extra $700 provides a lot of options for a better rig.

Best bang for the buck is always a better topic

Couldn't agree more.

Personally i would get 980x. Why? Well excluding price this is the same as it was before E8400 vs Q6600. They fought for 3-4Ghz territory these fight for 4-5Ghz, In the end It better to have a CPU that is 10% Max clock per clock @ single core applications then a CPU the is slower 50% when you actually need it. If a game supports 6 cores 980x will walk all over 2600K but if a game is not then 2600K will just be fast, more like a bit faster.

I'm looking at my Sig rig and wondering why anybody would ever need to improve on the 100+ fps I get in most games? Even if the 980x was faster in some mythical 6-core-optimized game, the 2600k is not going to be slower because of it...
Consider also that the Core i7 980x/990x are on a socket/platform that is effectively all but dead. They will receive no more "new" stuff. With LGA 1155, you get better performance now (since gaming is your priority), and more options in the future. The extra money you put towards a Core i7 980x now will likely even cover the new Ivy Bridge CPU (if not, then after you sell the Sandy Bridge it surely will).

At the least, with that kind of money, still skip the Core i7 980x and go with LGA 2011. I know it could be around half a year until it's out, which is an eternity to the impatient, but the window is all but done closing on LGA 1366 for outside users and I'd feel rather silly not only getting, but splurging, on one now.

You're gaming? Then your answer is Sandy Bridge. Done. Enjoy better performance for your uses and more extra money for the GPUs/SSDs/case/whatever.

Still plan on it unless I want that 27" monitor from Dell lol, only if Newegg changed their prices. Every other e-tailer has it around $600 for the W3680, the egg is still over $1k :/.

No.

again, you'll probably get BETTER gaming performance out of a 2500k than a 2600k or a 980x.

there are less threads but they have better architecture and the games don't use any more than 4 cores/threads at this point.

you can grab a 2600k if you want [you obviously have the budget for it] but you will NOT see any improvement whatsoever in gaming if you get a 980x.

Why cant you up the FSB on the I5/I7 K procs? Thats just a dumb move by intel and another reason why AMD is better.

someone with 3k posts and 81 rep says this?
.....wat

it makes overclocking a ton easier.. you leave the bclk about 100-103, then just up the multi and voltage. it's extremely easy, but that doesn't mean amd is better hahahaha

the 2500k and 2600k overclock a hell of a lot better than amd chips and perform a hell of a lot better as well....

edit:i'm sorry but i have to sig that.

Is a phenom II 1090T on Asrock 870 Extreme 3 better than my current system
considering that amd is not good at gaming because of low quality cache but it is ddr3 witch is faster that my ddr2

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/146?vs=53

The Q6600 is the closest CPU anand had in benches

according to anand they trade blows, however the X6 kills the Q6600 in gaming

there is nothing wrong with AMD in gaming they just arent as good as i7's and i5's
