My First Few Outings

Thread Starter
So I don't go out with my camera much, but try to! So my first few outings, with very little camera knowledge, this is what I got..

http://xseany.smugmug.com/

As you may know, a few months ago, I was here asking about which camera to get and whatnot, and like a week ago I was asking where to upload photos. Well, I have a Flickr and a Smugmug. I got Smugmug, because a friend recommended it to me, since he says it could prove profitable. With family+friends buying prints and whatnot. So I said, hell, why not?

I know, the firework shots are dreadful. Any suggestions while shooting?
I'm striving to become better.

the first two on your album of the guy on the bench and the one of him walking are cropped a little tight you cut his feet off. not to say that is bad just looks awkward to me. the rest look nice. and your fireworks arent THAT bad. i have never shot fireworks so i dont know what advice to give you other than keep practicing

I could be wrong.. but in order to make money off of what you sell on Smugmug, you have to have a pro account, no? Which smugmug account did you get? I'm pretty sure when people 'buy prints' they're essentially giving Smugmug money, smugmug prints them and sends the print(s) to them, and they keep the money... though I guess I could be wrong.

Huh, from the looks of it, you set yourself up with a pro account... to each their own, but there's more behind selling prints than just setting up a Smugmug Pro account. For example, if the people in your pics haven't signed releases and you're selling their photos, you're putting yourself in a risky situation.

He knows what I'm doing, been best friends since grade school lol. I've already showed him.

And yes, the one with the cropped feet, I keep forgetting that I don't get the full shot, it's like 70-90% of what I see. When I took the shot, there was feet, lol. I need to remember that more often.

Also, Yes, I have a pro account. They take care of printing/shipping. I set prices. Right now, I only have it set to where I make about $2 profit on any sell.

For fireworks shots, put the camera in "bulb" mode. Click to open the shutter as you see the rocket go up and click to close the shutter when the blast has reached it's full outward radius. Doing that you can get nice firework light streaks like this.

That sir, is wicked. I'm going to have to try that next time I get the chance. Anything I could practice that technique on? Since I don't have fireworks lol.. My guess would be traffic at night? Since the car headlights are constantly moving?

I'm not asking for people to buy, I'm asking for constructive criticism. Should I just upload to Flickr and link that instead? Or would that also be against the rules since it is a personal website...? Although people do have their accounts linked in their sig and link in post..

Anything at night can be used with bulb setting, but you'll have to experiment on exposure times. Point it up at the night sky in a dark area, you'll be amazed what's up there that you can't see with the naked eye. If nothing else, Labor Day fireworks will be coming soon in some places.
