Am I getting 5.1 Surround/Will Soundcard help [Headset]

Hello all. I have been using this headset set for a while and I am just wanting to get some conformation with people more experienced at this to make sure that I am receiving 5.1 surround. Apologies if this is the right place or the right things I should be posting here.

There is no wireless with this set up.
My Sound card is built in with my motherboard.

What I have.

Astro A30
http://www.astrogaming.com/headsets/...-astro-edition

Astro MixAmp (Wired)
http://www.astrogaming.com/mixamp/mixamp-usb

So I have plugged in the optical cable from my motherboard to the mixamp itself. The mixamp is powered. From the mixamp I have plugged in my headset.

With the windows setting I have selected the Optical Output:

I have then selected in the options of that optical output to be 5.1 surround:

I have been told that you do need the 5.1 setting to get the real surround sound that the mixamp can produce.

As before, am I really getting 5.1 surround for my headset with my setup.

Also with a sound card help to ensure this? Do I need one?

Would it be better to buy one to improve sound quality? If so which one for my set up.

Thanks for any help.

You have the correct settings, and your Realteck onboard sound should be pretty much as good as any soundcard for DolbyDigitalLive, I don't think you'd gain anything adding a soundcard for a digital connection.

I've not used the A30/mixamp so I can't say how it should sound, however I am using 5.1 in windows with Dolby Virtual Headphone/Virtual 5.1 through stereo headphone so it should in theory be similar. In the windows sound test I can't hear 5.1, in games however it's clearly apparent - I'm guessing it should be the same for you.

I think I get it in both the sound test and in games. In games it does seem to be clear and in the sound test I hear 5 sounds coming from various directions then the base (the boom effect).

Either way thanks for the info. Just glad to know it is working correctly and I haven't done something wrong.
