Overclocking No No's....what are they?

Yes, pretty much what the title states. I'm new to CPU oc'ing and don't want to make any noob mistakes...

I know not to up the voltage a tremendous amount at one time and that is about it. Also, don't let CPU get higher than 80c. Any others?

Don't run multiple programs when stress testing perhaps?

First thing is you should specify the CPU you plan to OC. I'd assume you mean the i7 in your sig though.
Some stuff I can think is things like: not setting the Vcore to auto, never ocing with stock coolers, always bump up the clock in small intervals...stuff like that.

It's very simple to overclock the 2500K and the 2600K.

All you do is bump up the multiplayer untill it BSOD's then just bump up the Vcore untill it stops then run 1 hour of Prime95 small ones, then 1 hour or Memtest86 then just play the games you want and if it BSOD's then just bump up the voltage one time everytime it BSOD's.

If you are really unsure then read some guides.

When going for 24/7 clocks never use software OCing

Do not leave any power saving features on (well it's debatable but in general just don't)

....

the list goes on, but the best way to get into it is to read some guides for your platform.

All great tips so far

Add to this,

For a quick and dirty stability test, run LinX or IBT for 20 runs (do not leave your PC unattended while running)

Write down your BIOS settings for reference and trouble shooting

Use small steps in voltage change and CPU frequency.

Test often, test hard

Good luck

Yes sir, that is what i plan to OC....it is the cpu and rig in my sig.

I already tried bumping up the cpu ratio to 40. Everything booted up fine. Do I need to disable automatic vcore then...if I have that option? I also ran Prime95 for about 10 minutes with no problem. Should I keep upping the ratio until I get the BSOD immediately after starting PRime95?

Thanks for the help everyone. You guys are awesome.

Make sure to test for stability before each increase in clock. Don't increase your vcore more than you need to. Keep everything as cool as you can. Take your time. Enjoy it!!

EDIT: As you approach what you think is the CPU clock limit, make sure to test for at least an hour for stability (longer is better).

Don't think your OC is guaranteed. Just because one person got X at Y voltage and Z temperature doesn't mean your OC will be the same. Could be better, could be worse. Take it for what it is.

No need for Prime95 just yet unless you want to stick to 4 GHz. These chips can go to 4.5 GHz very easy.

If you want to stick to 4 GHz run it for 1 hour and check the temps. Then run Memtest86 for 1 hour.
