Is the jump to 1440p/1600p worth it?

Thread Starter
I currently have a couple of 24'' 1080p LCD's. I'm grabbing a 6950 2GB this week and adding another in a month or two. I was wondering how noticeable the jump from 1080p to 1440p/1600p is, and if it was worth it considering I'd have to shell out $1000-1200 for one.

Subbed. I'm interested to know what experienced folks think as well.

Completely worth it. 1080p looks like ass now. Can never go back. And don't listen to the people how say you have to have tri sli 580s just to run games. That's false. My old 470 and now new 570 are doing just fine. CoD maxed at 90fps. Crysis maxed at 33fps. If you lurk Dell you can get a 27" for ~800 and 30" for ~1100.

So much real estate it's mind boggling.

The only real drawback is the put out considerable heat.

Really? I never thought heat would be an issue. Random lol

Since I'm getting two 2GB 6950's I now have the option of going for the larger resolutions without much problem.

2560x1600 is about twice as many pixels as 1080p.

Its about the same as going from 720p to 1080p.

1440p is worth it in my honest opinion, but only if you have the money to spend it or if you absolutely need it (graphics design, etc.). Otherwise, there are better areas of your life that you could spend the ~$700+ on. I will admit though, IPS panels are really nice and the difference between in-plane switching and the traditional twisted nematics (TN) panels is quite noticeable with everyday use (ie. images are sharper, clearer, etc.). However, could I justify the purchase? No. But do I regret buying it (the Apple Cinema Display)? Nope...I actually enjoy it, it's now sort of a "guilty pleasure". Bottomline: buy it if you need it or can afford it, otherwise your money can be better spent.

But going from a TN panel to an IPS is such a major leap you can't do that 720 to 1080p comparison.

1600p blows 1080p out of the water without question.

Edit: It really just boils down to whether you can justify spending $800-$1200 on something you stare at for probably 4 or more hours a day almost every single day of the year.
