Best laptop HDD for me?

post #1 of 34
Thread Starter
Hey, I've got a 320GB HDD in laptop right now, but I really want more space. What's the best 2.5" HDD to put in it? I want at least 500GB, preferably more. I'm also interested in the Hybrid Drives, but I hear they're kind of loud.

I keep hearing about SAMSUNG spinpoints. Would that be a good choice? Does it matter which model?

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply, but I really don't want to spend $100 for a non-hybrid drive., let alone $110. Is that really any better than the other 1TB 2.5" HDD's? Samsung make one for $90.

you should get the moments XT, 500GB cost about $100 it's a hybrid, a hair slower then an SSD (which in a 500GB version would cost ~$1250, rule of thumb ssd's cost $2.5 per GB) watch some reviews on it, it's a beast, best bang for the buck. since it's like 5 times faster then the 10,000 rpm velociraptor HDD. so really do you wanna pay 20 cents per GB or $2.5 for a hair faster =P

there is one review with a video of 4 of the same laptops, 1 has an ssd, 1 has the moments XT 1 has the velociraptor and the 4th has a 7200 rpm drive or maybe a 5400 rpm drive. i'll try and find it now for ya

Since when are hybrid drives any good?
Their performance is just a tad bit better than HDD's.
I wouldn't put my money on it. Rather get a SSD.

found it watch this

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kss98VdhSj0"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kss98VdhSj0[/ame]

for desktops users like me i would take 6 and use RAID 0, almost 3000GB of space, almost all the speed of the ssd, and best of all it costs about $700 not $7500. wanna go faster? by 8 drives and you will smoke 6 ssd's

im not hating on ssd's but when it comes to prices and performance yo wanna pay four times more for a hair more speed. I'm not one to talk since i did an intel build instead of an amd so i have to pay for or five times more, but that's because i am in love with my UD9

Off topic, but.

What do you need 3KW's of power for exactly?

I can't use RAID on a laptop. Well...not in any setup I would consider. Thanks for the video. I'm almost sold on the Hybrid drive, but what about the noise/shuddering? Newegg reviews often complain about this.
