Best laptop HDD for me? - Page 3

this is why SSD's are a waste, SSD= OCZ 240GB Vertex 3 Max IOPS Edition $560 read speed 550MB/s write speed 520MB/s VS WD2500BEKT, 250GBs, read and write speeds about 150MB/s here's the kick in the balls it cost about $45 but ill go with $50

10 of those HDD's in a perfect world would produce 1500 MB/s read and write, give you about 2500GB of space and cost you $500. to MATCH that performance speed in that ssd you would need 3 of them costing you $1680, to match that storage space it would take 10.41 ssd's so i give them a fair fighting chance and round DOWN, that cost you $5600.

so my desktop will have HDD's since i can't seem to find any reason to blow that kind of money. that stupid ssd is $560 for 240GB, i can beat that with 4 HDD's giving me 1000GB of space and yet i only spent $200. yes the space will less then that because of raid and the speeds should be about even. price wise, i won't waste my money since every time i turn around there is a new ssd that smokes the old one. GOD BLESS RAID 0, i have never had my raid setup fail, for years, take care of your rig, do tune ups and you'll never have a problem, unless you let hellen keller run around with a few gallons of sulfuric acid, then god be with you

Last time I checked 500GB Scorpio Blacks were far cheaper.

http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...D&promoid=1337

They have been approximately $60 on sale for the past year - even back when 5400RPM 500GB laptop drives were $50-55 on sale.

The cheapest I've ever seen a 500GB Momentus XT was $80. Usually it's $10-20 higher than that. When I bought my first 500GB Scorpio Black for $60, Momentus XT 500GB's were $140+.

i just went to microcenter and looked at a 500GB WD scorpio black and the 500GB XT and they were both $100 this was 2 months ago, my friend has some stupid laptop i can't remember and wanted to ditch his 120gb HDD and get something bigger and faster and not spend loads, he has the master set of CS4 on it, don't ask me why when he has a custom built rig from NJIT where he went to college and i had to fix that for him. those fools used a casio blue to boot from and a scorpio black as a backup. time for me to get some sleep, my UD9 comes home tm, well today, she has been gone for 3.5 weeks. the joke is on the fool i bought it from, i paid $175 for it and it was trashed, sent it in under warranty and now =) well she's coming home and i can't wait to once again make smores using my striders lol i wish

Okay. Some clarification here:

1. I have a LAPTOP. I cannot use two separate drives without one being external or doing some serious modding. It's too new for that.

2. The reason I want extra space is because I like to experiment with lots of operating systems. I had 4 running about a week ago. I would have had more if I had the space.

3. I do have a significantly more powerful desktop computer. I don't care about gaming performance for the HDD. Just capacity and boot time.

4. Read number 1 again.

Thanks for all the input. I believe I've rep'd everyone who seemed to respond reasonably and on topic. (No offense if I didn't rep you--I might have overlooked your valuable post.)

well i think we can all agree that the XT is your best bet, unless mommy and daddy are gonna let you run free with their credit cards or you make $250K after taxes so money means nothing to you. as far as reliability goes, don't go swimming with your laptop, but seriously, don't have it in your bed with blankets blocking the fan holes and stuff.

more like 3200W since both at peak voltage be 1600 each. i did it for laughs at first then realized that my power is very clean because there is almost no load on them ever.

i also hate prius's so this is me protesting. if your dumb enough to buy you should be drowned in that car. 44mpg your average diesel does better then that with the golf TDI coming in a like 65. the prius actually is the worst car ever, the nickel for that batteries produces acid rain when mined, then everything needs to go around the world to be built. as top gear said. "why would you want a car that has don't 5.5million miles before you even buy it

Budget = $100 for hybrid, $70 for full HDD (preferably less), $150 for SSD (which will not happen unless some idiot is selling a high capacity SSD completely ignorant of its value)

This whole upgrade is really for the sake of having an external HDD (I'll put my 320GB in a cheap enclosure I bought).

also desktop users that have no budget should by a OCZ RevoDrive X2 PCI-Express SSD, so once again i must say i can't see why anyone would buy an ssd when you cannot justify the price $2.5 per GB

You do realise that Power Supplies run very inefficiently when running way under 50% load? You'r machine is only pulling about 10-20% from those PSUs. Also, the whole "power being clean" thing is a load of rubbish. You could run your rig on a quality 600W PSU with no difference in performance or reliability.

Does not compute, you make zero sense. And why are you talking about Golfs vs Priuses?
