Thats about what I was thinking.
I would almost recommend a pair of Swan D1080MKII 08 speakers and a good sub to go with them.
With your card anything less than the Swan M10 set is an insult(almost any pre-assembled kit will be), and even those are underpowered.

Meh, could I just go with the powered Audioengine A5s and a powered Dayton 12" 150w sub?

Yeah actually. That's not bad.
More simple too.

Will they sound pretty similar?

I would assume yes. They will sound different in some ways though so you might prefer the sound of one over the other. You'd have to hear them both in person to make that decision though. I would think either would serve you well.

What is the benefit of having not powered speakers, an amp, and sub versus powered speakers, and a sub for less?

With the amp you have more flexibility for later upgrades and better bass management. More expensive amps also get you more inputs so you can hook lots of stuff up to them if you wished. One setup won't automatically sound better than the other though. I went with the powered speaker route because I have zero room for an amp.

Well if I don't feel like dropping any more money on speakers than $500 shouldn't I just go with the powered speakers?
