Vertex 3 240GB Raid 0 Meh?

Thread Starter
So I just installed the 2 Vertex 3 240GB Raid 0. Not without a huge F'in hassle with my lovely Marvel 6gbsController on my G1 Assassin.

I Ran Crystal and I came up with Reads of 580-600 and writes of 550 ish.

Is it just me or shouldnt I be expecting a lot more in Raid Zero?

It took forever to get Win 7 to even see the Raid array. Running (VD 01.01) I was thinking that I would see numbers in the 1000+ Range. Tips? Thoughts? Better Mobo with a better controller to recommend?

Thanks!

Dude that SUCKS, only 600MBPS read and 550 write? Well since youre so disapointed ill trade you my RAID 640's, they might be more of teh speed youre expecting (90 write, 100read)

^ This is your problem. I thinkg there should be a sticky somewhere saying "Never use Marvell controllers on your motherboard"! Because so many people fall victim of marketing by motherboard manufacturers (I am one of them) when they say it's 6 Gb/s transfer rate. Well, it is not! It gives horrible performance, it doesn't support TRIM and it's drivers are buggy.

Use Intel 3 Gb/s controller and you will get much better results. RAIDing SSDs is also not the best idea. You lose TRIM support in RAID arrays and, plus, the performance difference is not noticeable in real life, only in benchmarks. After you plug to Intel, get these drivers - Intel® Rapid Storage Technology.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! Will I be bottle necked as a result? Going from the 6gbs to the 3gbs?

Yes, you will be, but only in terms of sequential read/write speeds, which are not the most important if you will be using this SSD as OS drive.

I would also use both drives separately since you lose TRIM support in RAID arrays. The real life difference is not noticeable. RAID 0 is only good for benchmarks.

Not to mention the mobo is capped around 700MBPS "theoretical max" on the controller side

You'd want to get a dedicated controller, like a PERC6/i if you want to break that barrier. With those drives, I'd bet you could pull 1.0Gbps easy

But

You're gonna lose trim support
RAID adds latency
drivers are buggy sometimes
RAID is a headache in general

RAID for SSDs is meh. I had RAID 0 SSD's and traded it in for one fatty SSD and I feel like RAIDing SSD's is stupid now. So much trouble for so little gain (and much loss)

Thanks for the comments! I'm going to do some research into the Raid Controller you mentioned...

Also what SSD drive is large capacity that will compare to the specs of the Vertex 3?

Here are the numbers that I just ran. How do they look?

Try AS SSD. It's more neat looking And post a screen here.

But overall looks good to me. Don't waste money on another controller. The difference won't be noticeable.

Those are some explosively high numbers.

Honestly you wont lose much dropping to a Vertex 3 with double the capacity, or just getting another SSD with the same controller from Corsair or something. I would recomend the Intel SSD, but its not as fast.

And like I said man, i wouldn't bother RAIDing SSDs. It adds latency, and the lack of latency is what makes them so good.

K last question (at least for the next 5 mins lol) What about the new 1155 Asus z68 IV board? I noticed it DOES have Intel "Raid" 6gbs ports as well as the junk Marvell.

I'm at a point that I can swap out alot of my equip with no cost to me except for the time. Will the 1155 provide any better performance with SSD VS my 1366? It looks like there are lot more 6GBS ports on the MOBO as well as USB 3 etc.... (ASUS Maximus IV Extreme -Z)

What do you think?
