Processor for a music production PC

Thread Starter
I am a music producer and DJ, and I am currently churning out productions on my PC with the following hardware:

AMD X2 7750 Kuma (2.7GHz)
2GB DDR2 RAM
Random cheap Biostar motherboard
ATI HD 4670
Audigy SE soundcard
Windows 7

I use FL Studio and was wondering if I would benefit from a quad core CPU or if I could continue using another dual core. I haven't really experienced any slowdowns but my productions are getting more complicated and using a lot of real-time effects and whatnot so I would rather avoid that. Also I like to play L4d2 every once in a while and it lags a bit on my 1920x1080 monitor.

Also how much RAM would be enough? I feel I am maxing out my 2GB. I know some people who use Ableton Live go for 8GB of RAM but I'm not sure that really is practical.

So basically a PC that will keep up with all my VSTs and plugins all the while playing L4d2 maxed. I don't really need a soundcard with 20 ins/outs or any snazzy stuff, I think my Audigy is doing fine. I really want to use a PC instead of a Mac, I already have a Macbook Pro for live performances but FL Studio is PC only and I have a preference for Windows.

P.S. intel or amd, I really don't care as long as it doesn't break the bank. Not overclocking, so please keep that in mind.

I'd get a i5 2500 or a i7 2600. Both are great chips.

even an i3 2100 would be nice. it is a dual core, but it keeps up with quad core AMD chips.

plus its only a hundred dollar chip.

i would recommend getting a micro ATX motherboard (just for a graphics card and a sound card and maybe a sound recording card or an internet card or whatever.) that way you can keep it small and have room for all your equipment. you probably dont want a massive computer getting in your way.

anyway, i doubt you will need more than an i3 2100 for making music (plus it can handle games very well), and you can save the money for a dual monitor setup or a real nice 2.1 system for your PC.

dont get above a GTX 560 Ti for the graphics card, anything else will cost a lot more and not increase your performance in left for dead at 1080p. (you would probably be best off getting a 520 or a 460)

shoot over to head-fi.org and look at the sound card section, maybe start a thread with your needs. that is what you want to concentrate on.

oh, and a SSD would be really nice if you have the extra money. then get a 1TB HDD to hold all your music. or get 2 of them for raid 1 (or 3 of them and put them in raid 5) if you want to make sure you dont loose your music you have saved.

Thank you, that's just what I needed.

One last question: a 520 will outperform a 4670?

Any quadcore will do to make sure the pc doesnt stutter when recording.
Intel Q8400 or Phenom II 955 and 4GB ram should be more than enough.

As for left 4 dead lagging on 1920x1080, its the HD4670 holding you back, not the athlon 7750. Dont get the GT520, your HD4670 is ten times faster than that.
The GT520 is like a 9400GT with dx11 lol. Get at least a 1GB GTX550 for 1080p resolution
