Top end for portables would be Sennheiser HD 25's. There is an awesome Adidas version

The fact that you didn't even list a specific pair you were comparing them to shows you are talking from no knowledge or experience. And the fact that you listed 5.1 headphones for listening to music confirms this.

Dre's beats are designed for people that look for the way headphones look instead of quality and comfort when buying. My opinion aside:

If they are comfortable and sound good to you (no one else, everyone has a different perception on how they like music/audio) you should go for them. Make sure you test them thoroughly.

For the exact same money in Hong Kong, you can get a pair of Klipsch x10i, Bowers&Wilkins P5s or Grado SR325i, all of which are so far ahead it is shocking.

The Dre s are such overrated **** that it only shows how the mp3 has eradicated what people think, music should sound like...

I have the Audio-Technica M50's and they rock. Really well-balanced sound across all ranges, not just bass.

The Beats are $50 sound headphones with extra bass marketed and overpriced.

Get the guy to go into the local Guitar Center. Let him try the headphones. Watch the reaction. Report here. The Beats by Dre are $300 headphones at $80 sound quality. With that money, he could of bought beyerdynamic DT1350's for portable headphones. The Beats' price is laughable.

Dunno how Dre puts his name on 'em, really (rhetorical) - especially since he knows what real quality is as a producer/artist etc.

...Can't expect the people to listen to the chronic with shwag headphones

Dr. Dre basically sold out really. At least Jay-Z has some business ethics and actually endorsed headphones that are actually half decent for the price (Skullcandy Aviators) and looks great, unlike the tacky plastic BS that is the Beats. Much respect for Shawn Carter as an entrepreneur. The cream of the crop in terms of hip-hop moguls. Shawn Carter knows business.

To be honest, I don't see the point in buying these headphones other than the brand name. The lower end models are horribly built and feel like they will snap after the slightest pressure is applied. The pros feel pretty solid, but then again so do other headphones. I also don't think any of the Beats line of headphones are particularly good looking at all. As for the sound, I don't think much needs to be said. All imo of course.
