Overclocking CPU Voltage... make it simple - Page 2

Oh, yeah. This isn't popular with most here, but ditch prime95. IntelBurn Test 2.51 will tell you what you need to know in five minutes! IMHO, prime95 is complete waste of valuable time. If you want to test your system for an extended period, you can do that with IBT as well, but the purpose of either is to find out if you have a stable system. How much time do you have to waste?

thanks for all the info jcfsusmc. The only reason I have so much RAM is because it was a crazy deal, 16GB for $99 =D, and I run multi programs on multi screens. I'm thinking bout not overclocking my RAM because I have so much. I'm at 4.0GHz/v1.5 stable so I think I'm done for now. Do you think I should lower my voltage?

And the answer your question (How much time do you have to waste?).... lots.. I work from home

2x4=8gb is still lots for programs, but i dunno what you run. The thing is, mostly for 4 sticks of ram, you need a bit more ram voltage then the rated voltage for your ram. Especially when you are overclocking. So if you don't need 16gb, 2 sticks of 4gb ram is the way to go.

As for the voltage, did you raise gradually once it failed prime95 or IntelBurnTest ? Or did you just "heck i'll give 1.5v right away and be done with it" ? Also watch temps all the time. You don't wanna go above 55c.

it failed on prime95... well two cores failed at v1.475 so I went to v1.5000 and 1 core failed. I ran CINEBENCH Windows 64 with no crash at both voltage setting. Also I'm removing 2 RAM cards (4GB) because after testing and heavy PC work, I barely went over 5GB, it was a good deal so I got 16GB but I'll probably use them on a customer build. And also my CPU is watercooled so it never goes close to 40c, even when overclocking. At stock settings and max loads I get to 28c.

If you run 4.0 all the time, no. Your CPU will only take what it needs (usually 1.39-1.41 under load).

1. Start with 220 FSB
2. Multiplier 17
3. NB and HT x11. Below 220, x12.
4. CPU voltage 1.475. You only need 1.5 or more when you get the hang of this CPU (which is very difficult to stabilize at higher freq's anyway) and you can stabilize a 4.1 or more.
5. You have way too much ram for a good OC. 4-6GB max. Most 1333-1600 ram chips work great at 9-9-9-24-31-CR1. Seriously, One 4gb chip is all you need. Put the rest back in if you need to play a ram intensive game. Right now, all you need is a base from which you can tweak later. CPU-Z will tell you what your ram timings "should" be on the SPD tab.
6. Hope this helps. You seem to be trying to get "it all done" at the same time and that is just not going to happen.
7. Have a purpose and goal for your OC (competition, gaming, etc.). Then go for the goal.
8. Have fun!

It has been my experience here that short guides are most effective, giving the OP a good starting point. Most of the "How to..." lengthy guides here are either too old, or are system specific. I've seen it written here dozens of times, "every system is different, even if you have the same components."

Thanks for the rep and the compliment. I am by NO means an expert on anyone's system (except my own!)

+1 to you, too!
