Setting up a Website. Need some resources.

Thread Starter
And by resources I mean a basic PHP/SQL website with a template. I'm not too familiar with HTML or PHP, so it would be epic if someone could point me in the direction of a PHP website. Doesn't need a forum, just something with a spot for a small blog and a bio. I'm running all of this off of WAMP, if that helps.

Look at Wordpress. Really easy to setup and tons of free and cheap templates you can buy to get you started with a nice looking website with almost no effort. Also, it will scale as you want to do more really well.

Wordpress also has the best documentation of any other CMS/Blog software out there.

x10hosting and freehostia are both great. Used both for years, free and paid accounts. x10 tends to be a little better with free accounts. Both will be good for what your wanting I believe.

Wordpress is easy to work with on small sites, but I disagree with this comment. We managed a wordpress site for someone and when it gets to be multiple pages with different content, Wordpress becomes a nightmare.

I can't see how you would have such a problem, the interface is reall easy to use, I just can't see how you could make it any simpler. All other platforms do it in a similar way really

It is too simple - it forces you to design your site within its constraints.

If you are doing anything remotely complicated you need to jump through hoops designed to "keep it simple". And designing a simple site from the ground up would be simple in HTML and PHP, especially if you start from an existing template.

I was only responding to the scaling easily comment, which I don't agree with. I know plenty of people use Wordpress, so I'm not discouraging you from using it, just adding my experience.

Yes, Any off the shelf CMS is going to impose restrictions/limitations on what you can do without jumping through some hoops. I too prefer to code everything from scratch and will usually throw wordpress in for Blogging functionality only. BUT... the OP was obviously looking for something easy and does not have a lot of experience and there is NO OTHER SYSTEM out there that comes even close to what Wordpress gives you out of the box.

Compared to say Joomla or Drupal, both good systems in their own way wordpress is a godsend for someone setting up their first site/blog.

Yep - I was just adding to someone's comment that it scaled well.

There is nothing wrong with using Wordpress for a simple blog type site.
