Copper Vs Aluminium Heatsinks?

Thread Starter
Okay, unsure if this specific question has been asked before:

I'm looking at some small heatsinks for my Grahics Card's MOSFETs and RAM, which is better;

4mm high Copper, or 9mm high Aluminium?
Which would dissipate heat better from MOSFETs/VRAM?. (With and without a fan blowing directly onto the area)

$(KGrHqN,!gsE3ErMnCRUBOGuOrJwJQ~~0_1.JPG
!B)0gO1!Bmk~$(KGrHqYOKnEEvyFrzGsKBMPIoUySE!~~_35.JPG

Enzotech MOS-C1/C10 are unavailable over here anymore, only place I can get them are eBay for £15-19, same with the Swiftech MC14, MC20's are here for over a tenner but only four, and Aluminium.

I wanna be able to cool my Card's MOSFETs as effectively as possible, while staying under a 3rd party cooler's clearance height.
It's also possible I'll just strap a 120mm fan onto the current cooler once I get the heatsinks, for a nice volume of air, until I can afford an Icy.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. smile.gif

Copper is better at transfering heat. This is why you rarely see many heatsinks made of it, also because they are so damn heavy.

Aluminum is normally cheaper though.

Which will perform better? An indirect way to answer the question is to compare the retail price of the 2 products. The one costing more is usually the better performer.

These products from PC Cooler are available in my local stores here and I can say the copper ones (B16) cost about twice as the aluminum ones (eg B30)
B16: http://www.pccooler.cn/cn/proview.php?pro_typeid=248&pro_typeid2=263&pro_id=1587
B30: http://www.pccooler.cn/cn/proview.php?pro_typeid=248&pro_typeid2=263&pro_id=1725

Before you buy the copper ones, make sure you have enough clearance because they are not 4mm tall but 5.5mm.
And, as they are rather short, make sure you have some airflow over them to assist the heat dissipation.

If there is no fan blowing air over them, then I would rather chose the aluminum ones with more surface area.

eBay, the Copper are £2.94 from China with about a week+ wait, the Aluminium I can also get from China for £1.74, or from UK with 1-2day wait for £4.49 (which I'd rather do than wait if I went with Aluminium, the Copper's are hard to find over here so I'd wait for them ones if I went with it), so for me, the Aluminium will be more expensive, lol...

My Musashi's heatsinks are about 9mm high, and thinking about that aspect alone, wow those Copper one's will really be flat.
But my question remains, which will disperse heat and keep the FET/RAM cooler, of the 5mm Copper or the higher Aluminium?

Will the difference be completely negligible between the two, should I just get the Aluminium ones and stop wasting people's time and my brain with such thoughts, or is it a matter of the Copper will indeed be much better for them?
Obviously I'd love to go for Enzotech's or Swiftech's if I could, but I'm not really prepared to spend £20 on some heatsinks, and I'll probably have to chop them down a little anyway.

Thanks for the replies so far from you both. smile.gif

If those are really copper, go for them. But the difference will be not much, in this size.
Copper has a better thermal conductivity, and is heavier, and also costs more. This is why they build the most sinks of Alu.
Another thing is, Copper needs to be surface coated with something, otherwise it will be a thin brown rusty layer after a short time. This doesnt affect cooling, but makes it unable to sell, due to optics smile.gif Therefore they are all coated, painted, etc. This way, the customer is easy fooled, for what material is really under the painting...
