Overclocking on the Asrock Z68 Extreme 4

I'm a newbie to CPU overclocking. I have the setup in signature and are unsure of what things to change in the BIOS of my board to start my overclocking. Also, since everything is on auto, what base clock and vcore should i start with?

Any suggestions for this noob? Thanks everyone!

Even though it's for P67, this guide also applies to Z68 but not listed as so because Z68 was not available at the time this guide was published.

Thanks for the link. I had looked through that guide once before. The problem is, my bios is different. I have lots of features that have "Auto" as the setting for them. I think some are powersaving features. These seem to take precedence over the manual settings i have changed such as the ratio. I have so many options I don't know which ones to adjust and which ones to leave alone. According to this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...b3,2939-3.html
it seems there is an auto OC feature that does all the work for me. Is it recommended to use this feature or no?

Also, do I need to manually set fans or does my board take care of upping the fan speed in the case and on the cooler as needed?

Your board should do that if you are running 3pin or PWM Fans. You do have the option of turning them to full blast all the time if you wish, this is done in the bios. I'm not sure how yours is structured but mine is under PC health status and I disabled cool and quiet as well as the fan controllers. So they run full blast. Your board will do this, it just comes down to preference to whether you want a 'quiet sometimes' PC or a 'droning' PC. Mine arent' that loud, not too sure about the noctua but the fan speeds are fairly about the same as mine, so you may not mind.

So I followed the guide above and once I saved my settings, I got a black screen....windows never even booted at all. And this was a 40x multiplier and 1.12 vcore...

is this normal? do I have a crappy chip?
