High CPU usage? - Page 4

Kcuestag just ran at 4.6Ghz on his sandy without HT. His usage was in the 90's like my test at 4Ghz with no HT. I guess my CPU is fine afterall.

Couple of things.

BC2 is using up four cores and spreading load across what looks like your '8'. The same thing happens on X6 chips.

Secondly, your rig is more than plenty to handle all current and I dare say future games for at least two years to come.

Thirdly, your concern over what your CPU usage is reporting isn't invalid, but it isn't something to be concerned about.

Your 'worry' about BF3 being an issue on your rig is, in my opinion, senseless.

Thank you everyone. I just wanted to throw 2 things in before we abandon thread.

A member did 2 pics of his using during BFBC2 same settings as me. He has less usage.

Do you have BFBC2? I was wondering if you could play some max out, CF on, leave task manager running and PM a screenie for me to compare with my CPU at 4Ghz no HT. My usage is almost full on all cores. Just wanna compare.

Thank you so much if you can do that.
Yes, I have BFBC2. I'll get you a cap later tonight as I'm not near my sig rig right now. I have a strange issue with BFBC2 though...after about 30 minutes or so in-game BFBC2 just exits out and completely closes to desktop. I don't know if it's a crossfire issue or an eyefinity issue. Do you have the same issue?
It use to happen to me if i was going in and out of game. Tried 11.6b? btw is it possible that 11.6b drivers can increase Utilization in games because it's a bit of a glue and stick driver? My usage is high. I don't remember it being as high? Anyway thanks mate
Here you go...I took 2 caps for you.

Also did a test with 3 cores and 6 threads. Gameplay and usage was the exact same. That's interesting. So when people say HT is useless for gaming, they need to see this thread because they could not be more wrong. HT is by far one of the best things ever from Intel.

couldn't agree more...
just for instance in ur case...if it had been a simple 4 core processor then the 4 cores maynot be utilized efficiently by the dual gpu setup.....
extra threads means extra feed to more gpus.....

As long as you dont have high cpu usage at idle, nothing is going on.

Well that's just totaly wrong. What about those people with a CPU at 0 usage but have a bottleneck in game?

Edit: Why does my mate have lower cpu usage? We had same cards, CPU speed, type. HT, game, game settings?

BFBC2 should only use at most 4 cores.

Find a better usage monitoring tool, like process explorer for instance which can track a single .exe and report back exactly how much cpu % that process is using.

What I'm saying is it will only actively process information on four threads. Windows will make it appear like it has activity on more threads than it can actually run - this is done because windows is set to control which cores the game uses and it automatically is told it can use all eight.

Your best bet would be to disable HT, or use a better program to monitor cpu usage, or go one step further in task manager to resource monitor and check the bfbc2.exe, that will put a line through total cpu usage representing how much of that usage derived from the selected exe.

I've found the best way to demonstrate that is with SuperPI, which we all know is a single threaded benchmark that maxes out one core.

However due to the way windows handles threads (which also negatively impacts stock chips ability to turbo boost properly) you don't see one core maxed out, instead you see activity on all threads.

What I'm trying to convey is you need a better system to measure usage since other subsystems will use clock cycles as well while playing the game. You need to isolate the .exe for BFBC2 directly and monitor it's total cpu usage. If you are reaching 50% cpu usage with eight threads active, you are probably hitting a point where you are in fact cpu limited.
