Lens suggestion for a D7000

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I'm the proud new owner of a brand spankin new Nikon D7000 and I'm looking for a lens suggestion.

I don't mind getting a fixed lens as long as it's wide angle and has a low F-stop.

I plan on taking alot of low light live show pictures and need something where I can catch the whole stage from pretty close or on stage.

Can anyone help?

+rep to all who do!

edit: oh yeah, budget is about $400

i would say a 50 1.4 would be in your price range but i dont think you would be able to get the whole stage

i just got a 30 1.4 and its fairly wide but i have never been at a show taking pictures. but i would say that if you want the entire stage assuming its not a huge stage. i wouldnt get anything longer than 30mm

like are you wanting to get the entire stage while upclose? because that calls for a ultra wide angle which in your price range you can easily get but it will be a 3rd party lens most likely

with most good quality lenses the wider you get they get very expensive and the longer you get once you get in the super tele range it also gets very expensive. everything in the middle is reasonably priced. wider angle lenses are harder to make so they cost more and i think super teles just have a ton of glass and thats why they are expensive

Boom, right here... I don't really mind a third party (like a sigma) and yes, a UWAL is right up my alley... what do you suggest?

Sigma 10-20 is a great lens. Had one before and loved it (then switched systems)
the older, slower version will be in your range

tamron er, Tokina that is, 11-18 I hear is good as well, but I've never owned one.
Edit: looks like the Tamron 10-24mm now has a rebate, but I'm not sure if it's in Canada too.

heres an ultra wide zoom. doesnt have a wide aperture but your camera can totally handle fairly high ISO i believe

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc..._6D_EX_DC.html

and heres a 14mm 3rd party, i dont know this brand but these are just examples

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...gle_f_2_8.html

i dont know much about the 3rd party lenses. i just got a sigma and im happy with it. i know of rokinon but never used one or know anyone with one.

check out tamron as well they have affordable lenses. they are by no means top of the line but will give you what you need and take good pictures too

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Nikon 35/1.8.

Thanks for that, but I'm not sure it's wide enough for what I want to do... I'm looking for something around 24-28mm, you seem to know what you're talking about being a fancy shmancy photography editor though hahah

I checked it out and it's actually pretty inexpensive too...
