Tablet for games?

And when I say games, I mean stuff like Minecraft and maybe some Source games. And when I say that, I mean that's really all I want to play portably. Minecraft and some Source games.

I know tablets aren't meant for gaming, but it's worth a shot to look. Really, I'm looking to replace my netbook (which can't even play Minecraft) with something a little bit more portable. I'm perfectly fine with using a USB or even wireless mouse and keyboard if it means I don't have to take those with me all the time. I don't want to be stuck in my room, or even my house all day just because I like my computer. Not to mention I like hanging out with friends, but as they have laptops and we like to play games together, they come over here. My computer may have a nice case with a handle, but it's a far cry from portable.

Which is fine, I don't want to give up my desktop! I simply want something portable as well that can play some games my friends and I like playing together, and I think a tablet fits that bill nicely (or a high end netbook, but I'd much rather not have a keyboard tagging along constantly).

At least, one that can run Windows 7 of course. If there is an Android tablet that can run the web client for Minecraft, then I guess I can use that without too much gripe, but I highly doubt one exists. However, don't tell me that a tablet that can lightly game doesn't exist, as I've found something I believe will work.

Of course, the small SSD size and slow CPU have me worried, but it looks like that can at least play Minecraft with decent settings, and that's the only must for me. I don't HAVE to play L4D2 with friends, but Minecraft is a must. I suppose I can upgrade the SSD or stick an SDHC card in there if I want more space.

How decent is this tablet? Do you know of any others that can run Minecraft? Do you know of anything cheaper that can run Minestuffs? Can you convince me to go with something different? wink.gif

If it can play eve, I'm sure it has a fighting chance playing Minecraft, correct?

Anyone? I would still like suggestions, maybe even give me reasons to get a different tablet. I simply want a tablet over a netbook and I'd prefer it to play Minecraft. I'm aiming for something that isn't terribly expensive so I can save up for it in a month or two through various means.

Clearly the whole Minecraft bit means it would probably be a Windows tablet. The tablet I listed above is what I'm looking at, but aesthetically it's not terribly appealing. And $500 is a bit on the high end.

Lets look at other things I also want. Multitasking is a big one. This is inherently included with Windows 7 and with most mobile operating systems. From my experience with my iPod Touch, the iOS isn't the best when it comes to multitasking. It may just be Meebo on my iPod, but it never seems to work half the time. Sometimes it will tell me while I'm in the middle of a game as soon as a message is sent, allow me to send a reply, then jumping back into the game. Other times it will tell me I've got a message almost an hour after I've received it, and even worse, makes it so I have to boot the game all over again just to get back in.

What I'm saying here is I don't really want an iPad, as my iPod Touch gives me all my quirky iOS bugs, I don't want my primary portable device to be like that. Not to mention, again, $500 is a bit high.

I can honestly say I don't know what Android is like, but I'm leaning away from it due to software incompatibility. I might be able to forgive that however if the other bits of software works out great. If I don't get those multitasking quirks that iOS has, I'd be happy. Clearly, I want to know when I have an instant message near instant if not instantly (I don't mind maybe a minute between received message and notification, but less is better), as well as not losing the state of the program. I don't mind stuff pausing like how iOS does it. At least not for games and perhaps the web browser if I'm using a different program for chatting. Come to think of it, the only stuff I require not freezing in the background is an instant messenger and a media player (including video).

And hey, who knows? Maybe that mobile port of Minecraft will have cross platform multiplayer (multiplayer being the main reason why I'd want to play Minecraft on this).

So yeah, I'm clearly open to suggestion.

If you are wanting to play Minecraft, I would recommend getting a netbook, even though you already have one. Look at the HP DM1Z, and the Lenovo X120e, and the Asus EEE PC 1215B. They all have the new fusion APU. They can run games very well and will be able to run Minecraft very easily. Just a thought

Netbooks still feel clunky to me and I'd much rather get something else. Sure netbooks aren't huge, and I'd rather take a 12" netbook over a 15" average laptop, I wish to try something new and appeal to my like of sleek simplicity. Aka, I don't want a built-on keyboard with me all the time.

Personally I think Android tablets are over priced at the moment (just an opinion so no personal attacks please fanboys). When the current $400 tabs drop to $200 then we're talking. As for Windows 7 on a tablet, every review I've read said there are still a lot of issues with it and you almost NEED a keyboard and mouse to enjoy it (so why not get a notebook if you're gonna need a kb/mouse with a win7 tab).

Have you considered the sony xperia play? It's far from a tablet but for minecraft+portability I doubt there's much better on the market. (although you would need to hook up some sort of small keypad for typing. mini bluetooth keyboard?)

Also, the play is running android and minecraft so although there's no "official" version of minecraft for android you can guarantee it's on it's way and will be here soon. If you can hold out Ben, I think amazing, cheap, android tablets that will be able to play minecraft are only a year or less away.

The Xperia Play is hardly cheap. It's more expensive then that Windows 7 tablet I linked to above. At least it is without a contract, and I'm NOT getting into a contract to use it. I don't want a new phone (at least a new contract phone), I just want to replace my netbook with hopes of playing certain games on it.

As for Minecraft being on it in the near future, that's nice and all, but we have no way of knowing if it has cross-platform multiplayer, and playing with my friends is sort of why I want to play Minecraft in the first place. Also, it's not a tablet.
