Which setup would work better running TF2 server(s)?

Thread Starter
Setup 1:
CPU - Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2Ghz 2MB cache (Will be OC'd to around 3Ghz)
MOBO - Asus P5K-V (volt modded)
RAM - Transcend AxE OC RAM DDR2 1066Mhz 3x1GB sticks

Setup 2:
CPU - AMD Athlon II X4 640 Quad Core 3.0Ghz 2MB cache (No idea to OC or not)
MOBO - Some Asus one, no idea as i wont have it yet
RAM - Zeppelin Xtra DDR3 1333Mhz 2x2GB sticks

Just asking this, since i heard that Steam/Orangebox whatever won't utilize more than 1 core. Is that really true?
We would be running max 1-2 Team Fortress 2 servers and one TeamSpeak2 or 3 server. Plus a small FTP server.

So which of that 2 Setup's would work out better to host those servers mostly lag-free?

Thanks,
Marky

I would think that a server would need the most ram and clock speed to reduce lag. So the AMD quad with 2x2gb of ram would be best. IMHO.

Setup 2. I know TF2 itself is multithreaded (there is a setting in options called multicore rendering) so I would assume the stuff server side might be too. Plus more cores will help out running the FTP alongside TF2, or even running the two servers like you said.

I was wondering about this.

The clients absolutely support multiple cores - but I'm not so sure about the dedicated servers. Some server documentation states that you can assign affinity to A CORE in the instance you have a multiple core system, but I don't see anything about multi core support explicitly.

What about the Cache size of the CPU's?

Since the Duo is 2 cores with 2MB cache so 1MB per core.
The Quad AMD is 4 cores with the same amount of total cache, so 512kb per core.

Or that won't matter really?

With source games you want high cpu. It makes all the difference. And it will use more than 1 core per game. My friend is running a DOD:S server and it has process spread across all 4 of his cores for 1 server. He has an OC of 3.8 and only using about 20% CPU when server is full.

As for ram, these don't take much. They aren't rendering anything but text. So 4 GB should be enough, but if you're building a long term server, go for 8.

Right, thanks for the replys, i have already built up the server with the AMD Quad and the 4GB DDR3 1333 ram

I would say for the amd setup, but really to be honest, either one would do it. I have a dell poweredge with 4x xeon 1.4ghz HT CPUs in it, and it will run as many source servers as I want and not slow down. So I wouldn't worry about it too much.
