Thermal Paste over time

Thread Starter
I was wondering after you apply thermal paste on your cpu and secure the cooler over it, will the thermal paste ever lose it's efficiency or like dry out requiring re-pasting?

if i'm not mistaken, the paste will cure and actually get better performance after getting set in for a couple days. some people do like to change their paste once a year.

I think in some cases where the cpu cooler is completely clogged with dirt and some poor computer is running at overheat threshold temps for a long period of time, its possibly for thermal paste to 'dry out'

it depends on what TIM it is, although most tims have a life span, if past they will harden and decrease you're temps and also glue together your hs to your cpu

depending on what product you use, most cure after a few days of burn in time, some are actually a grease which never hardens, and some harden, which could result in the cpu sticking to the cooler when you pull it out, damaging the cpu or board.

If its a good one then nope it shouldn't need to be re-applied at any time. Nevertheless if there is a lot of dust and the cpu is overheating then yeah it would be a good idea to re-apply thermal paste.

Most manufacturers will tell you the recommended time between re-aplications. Like AS5, it does last a long time, how long, I'm not sure, but the last release of Arctic Cooling MX-4, says it will last for 7 years, until it starts to loose it's ability to transfer heat. MX-2 & MX-3 had suggested every 6 months.
So you'll need to find the manufacturers web page, and find what there suggested time frame is.
