How will this last?

Thread Starter
So i have this small Samsung HDD in our server:

As you see it has run for over 984 days constantly by now, i don't really understand the data readings about failures and etc..

So will this HDD last for a couple more years without failing at all, or should there be a small SSD installed in there for the main steam/orangebox server data accesing?
Also how much of performance increase will it receive from it? Like will it be noticable at all on the gameserver(s) running on it?

Thanks,
Marky

#1) Remove your serial number next time.

#2) Generally speaking, Hard Disk manufacturers design their products to last a minimum of 100,000 hours and this drive in particular, has a start/stop count rating of 50,000 (25,000/ 25,000). Currently you have used about 23,616 hours of life, there is quite a bit of life left in this drive, IMO. Keep an eye on if you're worried and always make dailies.

EDIT: After further research, the HD161HJ has a design life of around 438,000 hours (5 Years, constant uptime). The most substantial and hardest hit part on a hard disk is the motor, which for it's size, is tiny. The motor has to, from a dead stop, spin a quarter ounce metal plate up to 5400-7200rpm; generally speaking, start/stops are not good.

Thanks for the reply, i guess i'll keep this HDD in there at least for storage.

How would a small SSD work out on a server like this? (Running TF2 / TeamSpeak / FTP servers) while keeping the HD161HJ for storage purposes and FTP?

How much of a performance increase would i notice?

Thanks,
Marky

I would just run it until it dies.

If you're worried, eventually migrate to RAID-1. (So that when it dies, you have no downtime)

Some drives die young. Others last 20 years. It's hit or miss. If the drive is working fine, I'd keep using it. I have a Raptor from about 8 years ago that still works perfect. It's nearing 40k power on hours. But Raptors do have better quality parts than that old Samsung drive.

IMO motors suffer the most strain when spinning up and down constantly. If you disable all HDD power saving features and keep it going, they tend to last longer. 24/7 use isn't that hard on motors - it's harder on the actuators/heads.

That's up to you. An SSD will make maploads faster - but do people care if they take 10 seconds or 15 seconds?

Map loading is also CPU limited in some games - and perhaps also network limited. Your server may flip maps really quickly with an SSD, but everyone still has to download some stuff before they can join.

When I upgraded from 3mbit to 7mbit, I was amazed that my loadtimes to join TF2 servers dropped by about 30%.
