It really isn't the case of one gpu over the other, but just something to keep in mind.

Regardless of what cooler a card has, every 580 will produce the same amount of heat, it is just a question of what happens to that heat.

The stock design keeps the chip warmer than the TFII however it exhuasts the heat out of the case, while the TFII will keep the chip cooler but move the heat into the case.

With a high airlfow case you should be better off but just know that the benefits of a TFII may be offset by it having to use the warmer air inside the case or by grabbing the hot air off the back of the Palit.

Either way you arrange the cards will work fine.

I think the Palit on bottom makes more sense cause it looks designed to exhaust 50% the heat out the case. The TFII only exhausts like 35% at best. Better for that to be on top. It's probably the better cooler, too.

Try 'em both ways and see which gives you lower average temps

No the protrusion is like 1 millimeter.

Very true.

It always cracks me up when people say 'I'm going with water cooling because my 480's make my room too hot' or the like. I'm like ... no, it doesn't work that way. In fact, it works the opposite way. The cooler the temp on your chip, the MORE heat is being emitted from the card (all other things being equal like volts, clocks, and GPU load).

It's Physics 101.

Do you have the Twin Frozr II or III? I have the III, maybe the fans and shrouds are slightly larger, because it definitely over laps to the point that I had to swap to my older sound card because it made the PCI-E x1 slots unusable. Here is a pic to show what I am talking about. It protrudes ever so slightly, just enough to make it so the fans would rob if I installed a card in that PCI-E x1 slot.
