Want to possibly set up a NAS?

Thread Starter
Okay: So here's the situation.

I have a Macbook Pro as my main computer now (Student, works well). I also have an XBOX 360 / PS3 and various other devices and roommates who like my music.

I also have a stupidly large, and valuable (to me) music collection I'd like to keep backed up.

I've been thinking of building (or just buying) a BASIC NAS with 1, maybe 2 terabytes of storage that I can use for music/pictures/files between computers.

I'm completely inexperienced when it comes to NAS so I'd like some suggestions, tips, or guides as to how to accomplish it.. I've also been reading and found some NAS also have a sort of cloud service. How hard would it be to set something up to where I could access my music on my Macbook at, say, someone else's house?

Look into unraid...it is an embedded NAS solution that runs off of a thumb drive and allows you to use any size SATA drives to form a RAID 4 array. It's relatively inexpensive, and you can use whatever drives you happen to have, unlike most RAID solutions.

I'm guessing you want a consumer grade NAS rather than something more powerful. (and harder to setup/manage)

It's up to you to investigate which does what you want.
