new Gamestop Impulse Terms of Service...

Includes this little gem:

Quote:
14. b. Removal of Content. Notwithstanding any other provision of this Agreement, Impulse and its licensors reserve the right to change, suspend, remove, or disable access to any Products, content, or other materials comprising a part of the Service at any time without notice. In no event shall Impulse be liable for the removal of or disabling of access to any such Products, content or materials under this Agreement. Impulse may also impose limits on the use of or access to certain features or portions of the Service, in any case and without notice or liability.
I archived my games and uninstalled the Impulse client, though it's kind of silly because you can't play the games without the client. This just seems like a real blunder given the rapid expansion of options for digital distribution.

I wouldn't be surprised if Steam or the other big distributors had similar lines in there agreements. Funny I just got the email about them updating them as I type this.. lol

Its pretty standard really to reserve there rights to refuse service without notice, release liability, etc, etc.

uh, i haven look for it but i bet Steam (and everyone else past/present/future) has a similar clause in their ToS

also, i can play Crysis (dl'ed from Impulse for $7.50) just fine without the client

Just uninstall your Impulse-tethered games and torrent the retail copies of them. You might not have multiplayer, but you're still entitled to them.

I don't know how impulse works but if you have serials, you could just plug them into an untouched copy off the torrents and it should work. Then you would get your multiplayer support.

That got me curious so I checked Steam's subscriber agreement:

Quote:
2. In the case of a one-time purchase of a product license (e.g., purchase of a single game) from Valve, Valve may choose to terminate or cancel your Subscription in its entirety or may terminate or cancel only a portion of the Subscription (e.g., access to the software via Steam) and Valve may, but is not obligated to, provide access (for a limited period of time) to the download of a stand-alone version of the software and content associated with such one-time purchase.
In practice it's not that different, but it doesimplicitly acknowledge the consumer's right to fair warning of the termination of access and explicitly mentions the means of providing remedial access.

The only game I have on impulse that I really care about is Gal Civ 2 and it forces you to update through impulse (even though impulse and stardock are now separate entities).

That is on everything ever.

Paranoia.
