When did it start? Any recent Windows updates, driver updates, or other intrusive software updates(itunes, etc.)?

Any hardware changes? Power outages? Electrical storms?
I used to get that and it dissapeared when I got a new hard drive . could be messed up Windows (Corrupt, missing files). Or hard drive is on its pool last legs.

But it's most likely the registry became corrupt, and since steam rely on the registry to know where things are, steam will no longer work.

run a chkdks C: /f /r on your C: drive from command prompt w/ admin rights. It will ask if you want to schedule it, say yes, then reboot. Let it scan.

Have any other partitions/drives? chkdsk x: /f /r. x being what ever drive. if it asks to dismount say no, then it will ask to schedule, say yes, reboot, let it scan.

After that open up command prompt w/ admin rights again and type sfc /scannow. Let it scan.

Reboot and see if that helped, if not, it could be a bad cable, bad HDD, or more likely bad driver or hardware elsewhere. You may also want to stock your memory as unstable/bad memory can corrupt the registry over time. That brings me to my next thing to do.

memtest86+ overnight.

edit: was writing post while you posted, so didn't see part about memtest. How long did you run it?

sorry, i was un aware of there being a difference between memtest and windows memory diagonstics tool, i let the WMDT do its thing. my memory is running at stock.

copy-pasta from a convo I had w/ another OCN member w/ a similar issue but no BSOD.

in addition to what I said in my prev. post.

{WLB}DesertRat [OCN]: -check/replace SATA cables if known good spares are availible. 99% of my bad cables LOOKED fine, but were bad. Be sure to throw away and/or render useless them if it is bad

{WLB}DesertRat [OCN]: -clean HSF of dust, and check mountings. If feeling adventurous, clean w/ alcohol thoroughly and remount w/ a dehydrated-pea sized dot of good TIM. ensure pressure is even and good

{WLB}DesertRat [OCN]: -Get combofix from bleepingcomputers, run it in safe mode with networking(you may have to uninstall AVAST! temporarily, but you should be able to override it's warnings). Anything it asks for to DL or install, do it. It's a legitimate and VERY useful program to remove nasty and often times VERY hidden malware and rootkits without causing damage to your OS

{WLB}DesertRat [OCN]: -If things are still not back to speedy normal, reset your CMOS and check to make sure settings are w/in spec.

{WLB}DesertRat [OCN]: -and finally, whether or not your issue has been fixed. DL and run CCleaner's registry cleaner until you get no errors. No need to back up the registry, in all my time using CCleaner, even when I was working as a computer tech, it's never caused any issues. At your discretion, also run normal ccleaner file cleanup

ok, so with ccleaner, it found 48 errors, upon looking at them, alot of them are from the games for window lives client, which i never use, although i remember having t update it recently so my woman could play batman AA, and i remember it not installing correctly, hope that did it,

i had to wipe steam, and start over which really blows, didnt have a chance of backing up any of my games .

so far, everything seems to be better, will update if anything happens, thanks
