Need help with a build

Thread Starter
Hello, my friend is building his first computer soon and I need help with deciding which parts he needs. His budget is $1100. Here is his build so far:

CPU- AMD PHENOM II X4 955 BE
GPU- ZOTAC GEFORCE GTX 460 1GB
MOBO- GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+
PSU- COOLER MASTER RS750
RAM- G.SKILL RIPJAWS X SERIES 4GB 1333
HDD- SAMSUNG SPINPOINT F3 1TB
ODD- SONY OPTIARC CD/DVD BURNER
CASE- ROSEWILL CHALLENGER
OS- WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM
MONITOR- HANNSPREE HF225DPB 21.5IN
MOUSE-*undecided
KEYBOARD- *undecided

Total price comes to 1016.39 with tax and shipping. This is without mouse and keyboard, and he needs both. He will be adding a second 460 and Bulldozer in the future. How does this build seem and what can be improved? Thanks.

OK, thanks. I took your advice and put better ram and a better optical drive in his build. Anyone else have any more suggestions?

Better psu. Stay away from Cooler master (unless silent gold).
Antec 750 $70 after mir
RG630 $60 shipped (or the 700W version for a few more $$)

Also, before you buy, take each part you are looking at and put it into the search option for combo deals. Make sure you are getting the best price.
Ex: Rosewell challenger/RG700 combo $110 shipped

Finally, as stated before, get better ram and make sure you take advantage of dual channel (2 or 4 dimms)

Oh yeah, check EVGA website for B-stock video cards. They have GTX460 ftw 1GB for $109 shipped.
It's so little!

I'll have to recommend against Badwrench's Challenger/RG700 combo, the RG700 actually is not a good Rosewill Green PSU (the PSU platform it is on is designed for 630W only). But you can get it with the 630W for $100
post #6 of 9
I still think this Antec is one of the best deals going for decent PSUs right now:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371044

.. I have the RoseWill 630W Green and can not complain (it's so overkill for my needs, I'll probably never have a reason to complain), but if I could have my choice I think I would go with the Antec brand.

I would personally spend less on the mobo unless there is a specific capability of the more expensive one that is necessary for the build requirements. An 8x/8x capable board will do SLI GTX460s just fine and you can get an ASRock 970 chipset that can do that for about $110 shipped.

If the build is aimed at BD it would be wise to go ahead and get some faster RAM now. We won't really know how intensive BD can be on RAM until we start getting benchmarks in, but it is supposed to support up to 1866MHZ speeds natively. I'd shoot for a 1600-8-8-8@1.65V or a 1600-9-9-9@1.5V type kit. Both can be found cheap.

Eric

Keep your 990x since you have SLI/CX and Bulldozer capabilities. In that budget, you could get two 460 GTX. Btw two of those equal or beat a 580 so it's a killer price to get them right now. As stated, change your ram from 1333 to 1600. Look for G.Skill 2x2 GB 1600 or even some 2x4GB in rebate for around 60$. And change the PSU

Asus Optical drive - Love Asus

AMD 6870 Video card - Same price, few $ more for 6950

PC P&C 750W PSU - Never had a bed egg with them

Everything else, apart from the case, looks good, but it all depends on the person what what kind of case they like. At least it's not an Antec
