Hi guys so your probably wondering what I'm on about here but the truth is I wasn't too sure which area to make this thread but I chose here because I have an i7 950 and maybe information coming from passionate intel'rs will be better.

Anyway I'm sure your wondering what I need help with/want to ask and that simply is:

"Is it worth upgrading from 6GB RAM to 12GB RAM?"

Now obliviously more would be better and the set is only £59 so it's an easy enough upgrade, the only thing is I'm wondering what an extra 6GB of RAM will actually help with? I mean don't get me wrong if I know if I was EXTREME multitasking with maybe 15+ programs open (or more I guess it depends how RAM demanding they are) that the extra RAM would get used and that would enhance my system. But the truth is (and the reason I'm posting this in the first place) I've never really seen it full (except when I used Photoshop and a few screen shots (turns out having a few 5040*1050 PNG's open eats your RAM like sweets))

So I'm considering getting 12GB but I really don't see how it will help, does anyone have any information that might help me choose whether to stick at 6GB or upgrade to 12GB?

EDIT:

People I have decided to upgrade because I'm filling up my RAM and there was a cheap deal just thought I'd update you

EDIT:

RAM has arrived and is now in the system, its running fine and thanks for all the advise =]

If you are doing a lot of video and image editing, it's definitely worth the upgrade. I have 8 Gb and it's not enough for After Effects for exemple ( it gobbles like 6.5 Gb, all of what I'm giving it ). If you don't, 6 Gb is plenty for everything else

If you aren't hitting ~85-90% utilization frequently there's no reason to upgrade.

Apparently with the next windows over 8gb ram is actually useful but I haven't heard anything that will become reality although atm anything over 8gb ram is pretty pointless. I have noticed newer and newer games are using more ram e.g. the new dx 11 + tess pack for crysis 2 makes use of up to 4gb ram

If you do more Photoshop stuff or get serious about (video) editing, then the extra 6GB should come in handy. I would do it just because though. And because overkill is what we do at OCN.

EDIT: I just saw your RAM speed. What you could do is get 3×4GB of higher speed RAM. You'd have more and it would be faster.
(For some reason something is making me think faster RAM helps a lot with photo/video editing, but I could have dreamed that up.)

see that's what i was wondering:

I have 2 GTX460's (1GB each although in SLI it doesn't double the amount of VRAM unfortunately so I have effectively 1GB of VRAM)

However in the DXDiag it says I have approximately 3804MB does that mean that the 1GB is counted from the GPU and windows is sharing 2.8GB of my RAM for the graphics? or is it the total 2GB from my GPU's and windows is sharing 1.8?

either way it means windows is sharing the RAM (or I've got the wrong end of the stick here) so if i added another 6GB will windows share more RAM for graphics?

pfft idk even I'm wondering how its come to the "Approx. Total Memory: 3804MB" if I'm honest I just don't know, but if I'm right and upgrading will help the VRAM then upgrading is a lot more appealing to me.
