[SA] - Southern Islands, Kepler, and Apple’s A6 process puzzle outed

Thread Starter
A very interesting article about the 28nm process most likely being used by AMD in their upcoming Radeon HD7000 series and also the explanation why that very same process is likely the reason Nvidia will be late into the game.
Quote:
The final piece of the TSMC 28nm HKMG process puzzle was put in place at SemiCon last week, it now makes sense. Chipworks got ahold of a Xilinx Kintex-7 FPGA, and it revealed a few secrets on the operating table.

recap,

There are more than one way to make/ use a 28nm chip, AMD will probably benefit in the short term due to lower power per clock speed. AMD will probably beat NVIDIA to market but it wont be with top end cards.

Hmmm, interesting read.

I hope Nvidia will be able to figure it out if this is indeed the case. I'm already considering upgrading my GPUs, and AMD looks like it currently has a solid lead in terms of switching to 28nm architecture for their GPUs...

That and I like how AMD in terms of price for performance.

Tough decisions ahead...

Im thinking this might be similar to the HD 5XXX / fermi scenario. AMD/ATI first to jump over to 28 NM and NVIDIA will have a hard time following suit.

yes... who is to say they aren't working with the HKMG 28nm process too? If nVidia is using that process then that puts them 6months behind... surely the process's are similar (low power vs performance) so it may be easy to design a high performing part... which could allow them to do a refresh/tweak (like AMD did when they went from 5xxx to 6xxx)

I just want some new hardware to look at. Socket 2011, Bulldozer, Southern Island, Kepler I don't care what it is as long as it can make my jaw hit the ground that's the only thing I care about.
Hmm, can't tell if the 79xx series will be on this LP 28mn process or the full HKMG... however, it does look like will be definitely getting the 78xx cards and below from AMD in a few months smile.gif
