high CPU temp?

Thread Starter
just got a i7 2600k and maximus gene-z and testing it on the bench it idles @ 50c with stock cooler, so i replaced that with a cooler master vortex plus and it idles @ 45c. it's all brand new w/stock speed & voltage. aren't these temps a bit high?

Yeah that seems a little high for stock settings. What are your ambient temps like? That can play a huge role in your CPU temps.

Did you apply enough TIM? Is the heatsink making proper contact with the CPU?

This the cooler?

http://www.frostytech.com/articlevie...articleID=2522

Its a small cooler isnt? 92 mm fan?

It also appears to be a push-pin mount, which are notorious for not having enough pressure applied to the cpu...

If this is the cooler, this is why you have high temps. Again, if this is this cooler, dont even think of OCing your CPU, it wont handle it

Well, your problem is theres no such thing as a 2800k.

Check on that first...

Any chance you think he or she meant 2600k ? I wonder. I personally enjoy the 2600kk.

..ok, we went & got some antec f5 paste & some little screws w/nuts to tightly hold down the vortex to the mobo and added another 92mm fan we had (laying around doing nothing) on top of the 92 it came with.
it now idles on the bench @40c. does that still seem a bit high?

40c isnt bad, plus its better than 45c. But idle temp isnt really that important (unless its really high) its the load temp that matters. Put your cpu under heavy load until the temp stabilizes and let us know that temp. Just a heads up, if it gets to 85c, id shut the stress test software down.
