it now idles on the bench @40c. does that still seem a bit high?
Yes its still high. As stated load temp is more important.

Question... with that CPU and case, why are you diddling around with a small, low profile cooler?

On stock clocks, it will manage but if you ever think of overclocking its not going to cope.

Im just curious...

Yeah ambient temps throw me off like no other. During the night or when it's starting to get dark, and at night time/early morning my temps idle are at 27-30 degrees max load at 50-52. But you catch it during the peak of the day or when the suns out, it will idle at 35-38 and max load at 55-57.

But I would definitely do a re-seat.

I'll try to make my objective a little more understandable.

I haven't put this rig together yet, I’m at the beginning stages of a build...and beginning with a bench testing of motherboard & CPU to see if anything is defective is where I begin.

I simply want to know if a i7 2600k (since I never had one before) normally idles at 50c on a bench in a stock environment.........OR..........do I have a defective product?

Oh, okay,,, we were obviously confused... sig rig and all

No CPU should idle at 50c... in any environment. Its not the CPU,,, its the cooler.

A small, 92mm fan is not going to be able to cope with any sort of load you throw at it.

Strongly suggest an better cooler... Have a look at the intel air cooling section and see what is currently floating everyone's boat.

Anything would be better than the small factor cooler you have now.

...anyway, i'm using xigmatek dark nite rigged for push-pull & running cpu @ 4.2ghz and all is well. I'm wondering why the cpu temp in BIOS reads 46c and after boot into W7, (in asus probe II) cpu temp reads 34c.

When in Bios, your CPU works at aprox 60% usage, hence the higher temps.
