Is there any danger in buying used overclocked CPU'S?

Big question buying a cpu you know has been thrashed in trying to over clock it. Is this a safe purchase? Will the cpu have degraded in speed/quality?

It depends on how much voltage was used, how the chip scaled, and what sort of cooling they were using. The duration of the OC also is a big factor. Are you asking this about a specific sale? Can you give us a link?

Nah no link, I'm thinking of buying a used amd am3 cpu probably a 965be to hold me over until bulldozer. But the way I see people running them at 4ghz kind of worries me.

I understand it takes a lot to kill a pc but i'd rather not pay for a dud.

As long as they haven't been putting obscene voltage through the chip then they should be fine. 4Ghz is perfectly achievable on those chips so I wouldn't worry.

Bulldozer is coming in a month or two. Save the money up for a bulldozer instead.

Hasn't that been said for the last six months though?
