Doesnt boosting the bass artificially through an eq especially given this is on my pc, just add more distortion?
Depends on a lot of factors, some psychological, other more quantifiable. It couldnt possibly hurt to tune up an EQ and see if it helps, if not nothing is lost and at least your curiosity will be sated.

AFAIK the mod only "expands" the soundstage a little bit, I don't see how it could really change the bass.
Maybe EQing will get you distortion; I don't notice any. To me, upping it a little just results in punchier, more impactful bass.

ill give it a shot for sure, do you have any thoughts on the different versions of the DT770s, there seems to be a premium and pro, and different ohm versions?

edit: i messed with the eq settings in itunes and it was bleh so i think a new set of headphones is in order. any ideas on all the different versions and variants of the DT770s though, no idea if the better version is worth the price increase, and then which ohm version to get
