Pretty excited with the results of this one. I went and took pictures of a friend since she volunteered to model for me.

Here is an example from the shoot:

Thanks :-P I wish I had my DSLR again with a 1.4 lens. I have a Canon G12 and so I am limited to shooting at 2.8 or smaller.

Highs look popped on the first, and that chain in the foreground is hella distracting.

Really like the second shot

I agree with the comment about having a shallower depth of field, the first shot would really benefit from some bokeh, even if added in post-processing. Maybe some skin smoothing too on the first shot. No disrespect to your friend of course. Good stuff though

EDIT: Half second edit... everyone has their own preferences.

Kept the highlights a little blown as I assume that was the look and not lens glare

+1, not to mention that the top of her head is cut off.

The second one is pretty good, but as noted could do with a shallower DOF.

Not really necessary to keep the top of the head in some portraits. I liked the look of this for this shot more.

Scalping is pretty much the worst offense when doing head shots.

Blown highs are really unflattering for skin -- and it's impossible to recover in post, making skin tones a real pain in the butt to fix. It looks like she's staring at the sun, which is pretty off-putting. I would have shot that later/earlier in the day to get that noon-ish sun off her face, and used the built-in flash for that "starry eyes" effect.
