To check your hard drive I'd recommend booting from something you can run DOS-mode HD Sentinel from; it's more accurate than HD Tune at finding bad sectors and reading more info from SMART.

How would I go about doing that, exactly?

Download the DOS version from their website, and either add it to a bootable DOS disc or boot to a DOS prompt and run it off the disc.

Or, alternatively, find a copy of Hiren's Boot CD (a newer one with legit software on it, which includes the free version of HD Sentinel) then burn it to CD.

I may be included or a part of Ultimate Boot CD too, I'm not sure.

Bit of an update, someone suggested I check Event Viewer. From the little I've seen so far, the error message that shows up most has been this:

The configuration of the AdminConnection\TCP protocol in the SQL instance BWDATOOLSET is not valid.

When Googling, I didn't find much, though someone mentioned their PC freezing/unfreezing. Which is kind of what I've been experiencing.

Further update:

That was in the application section. These are from the System section.

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort3. - That one showed up many times in a long line.

\SystemRoot\SysWow64\Drivers\GEARAspiWDM.sys has been blocked from loading due to incompatibility with this system. Please contact your software vendor for a compatible version of the driver. - That has shown up fairly often as well.

Well, I'm at a loss again. It doesn't seem like the HDD is in trouble. 7 or 8 tests now, all say it's healthy and there were no errors. I googled the "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\" error, and it seems like people seem to run into it out of nowhere. Mostly people on Windows 7, it seems. I've seen a few who said they bought new hardware thinking it was faulty, only to run into the same issues.

If anybody can think of that else this could be, I'd be glad to hear it. And I very much appreciate all the help I've gotten so far.

All these months later, this problem is still going on. I've tried a lot of stuff. There was some nonsense about some GEAR drivers/registry entries that could've been the problem. Removing that didn't help. Something about Apple as well. I dunno. I'm frustrated and never really wrote any of it down.

Things have changed slightly. I got one BSOD, but usually my PC will just lock up and stay that way before restarting itself. Other times it doesn't lock my computer up, it just removes my DVD drive from view, and the HDD light goes solid, despite not loading anything.

Here's what most of the error messages in Event Viewer look like lately:

The device, \Device\CdRom0, is not ready for access yet.

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort2.

I used to get this lotsa from time to time. This is usually caused by SATA drivers. But first, try this. Change the SATA port on the mobo that your HDD is connected. Also check SATA cables, firmly secured.

Do you know why you have that ASPI driver ? Usually some applications involving optic drive emulation(daemon tools) uses ASPI drivers.

PS: This is also caused by bad overclock, usually on the FSB/PCI frequencies. I'm not familiar with Intel terms. But if you were an AMD user, i'd say HTT link frequency or too high HT Reference Clock.

Well I haven't overclocked, so I don't think that could be it.

I did have DAEMON installed at one point. Guess it decided to leave leftovers. I'll try what you suggested. Thanks. I'll report back later.

Ok. If you have more than 1 HDD, do it for all of them, 1 at a time, then boot into windows. I'm not sure but you can also disconnect optic drive to pinpoint if it's really HDD.
