[SOLVED] 'Bout ready to throw out my CFX 6970s - Page 2

If your cards were pushing your PSU to its limit then I would expect it to crash during high load so that makes sense. Still, you have a great PSU and 750W should be fine for two 6970's AFAIK...
^^Having a great PSU doesn't make it infallible.

It doesnt crash unless im in game or doing soemthing graphically intensive like a bench or something.

That there is text book PSU failure. You can isolate it by timing how long it takes to reboot while you are at stock speed or underclocked speeds (ie. reduced TDP WATTAGE) versus the time when you're overclocked or at full speed. When there is a lower load, it should take longer to reboot or hit the PSU's maximum.

*PSU failures are typically sudden reboots because the power just cuts off.

These "grey-line" issues..and crash to black screen - which both require reboot to fix, sound like power related issues, such as OCP or thermal shut-down.

* Have you tried older drivers like 11.4's .. I had many issues with newer drivers and 6xxx GPU's.. often getting much hotter temps, and lower FPS headscratch.gif .. I still use the 11.4 for daily use, for best results.

Q- for the OP.. what are your load temps like? Are these GPU's on stock coolers still?

*if it is PSU related.. your GPU's should be squealing from the low input power coming from the PSU.. If you have a DMM - measure at the PCI-E power connections for +12v power.. if you see ~12.2-11.9v.. all is well. If its more like 11.91-11.78v ...well eek.gif .. you may have found your issue. I can say from my own experience, that a 1100mhz core on a 6950 is TOO much draw for a TX650 PSU... which by manufacturer quoted specs [both Corsair and AMD] should be able to handle this GPU with ease. I know your not running that high of an OC.. but having 2x GPU's and OC'ing.. well.. you get my point.

Downgrade your drivers to 11.5

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3865#ov this is my exact card. Temps on Heaven Bench at highest possible settings peak at 73C on primary card, 69C on secondary. Stays on an average around 65-67C under load.

No overclocks. Factory defaults.

One other thing to note, is that it requires me to physically hold the power button to turn it off. It keeps running until i do something, it does not reboot automatically.

I do not have a multimeter but i will find one and test that as well as the cards seperately

Test single cards. It's the most important thing to do when you have crahes with a CFX setup. CFX and its associated drivers are fine, but when you get a bad card you get a bad card. You might even find you don't want CFX, 1 6970 on a single 22" monitor is more than enough, you might find it's worth it just to sell the extra 6970.

It's also interesting that it doesn't crash on TF2 (which is a much weaker game graphically and wouldn't load the cards) as compared to Metro, etc. which makes it seem like a power issue- the more graphically intense a game the more watts your computer needs. Your X750 can handle CFX 6970s assuming it isn't dying. So check for squealing and use a multimeter as already suggested.

With no OC.. you should have no issues with the GPU's, temps or the PSU you are running... I would fully investigate the drivers as another possibility, once you checkout your power inputs on the GPU's..

Ok "squealing" literally the noise or some tech lingo im not getting. If its the noise, then my rig is completely silent minus the fans blowing air not dying type noise.

I am getting triple monitors soon for eyefinity so thats why i went ahead and bought the extra card.

The thing that strikes me as odd, is that i set Borderlands to 1680x1050, exit out and go back in and the res is changed to 1280x1024.

Also, TF2 is more graphically intensive than MoH:A, IIRC, on highest settings. But MoH crashes and TF2 doesnt.

I will test the cards independently, should I crank up the quality settings or leave on default for a single card test?

Also, do what driver should I use? latest - 11.6b? or older like 11.5 etc.

Hmm...my experience so far is that they do work, but only if you put a bit of effort in (switching between scissor/atr etc. because CAPs don't always work).

As for the OP's problem, I'm guessing either one of your cards is faulty or your PSU is spiking or dipping its 12v rail.

Your temperatures are absolutely fine, my 6970s hover around that.

The 11.7 preview drivers actually work pretty well for me, however I can honestly say I have never had my trifire setup lockup or crash with anything from 11.4.

And ignore the squealing comment...that makes little sense (check my sig if you want to know why things squeal).

Alright, things im gonna do is:

1. Check PSU PCIe connectors see if its dropping.
2. Trying 11.4 and 11.5b in CFX
3. Try single cards on 11.4, 11.5b, 11.6b.

Right about now i wish i had a test bench set up...

Also, can you explain this to me "switching between scissor/atr"
