[SOLVED] 'Bout ready to throw out my CFX 6970s - Page 5

No problems with either card, could play Metro and MoH:A for an hour without any issues on highest settings. Metro lagged a bit which fire fights but considered to be expected with something like Metro on very high.

So I tested the PSU.

Plugged each tip into their respective place. Sitting on this forum I got 12.27V.

After talking to a friend that has similar issues (cfx 5870) he said it wasn't his PSU, it wasn't the drives nor the graphics cards. But CCC. He said to go into CCC disable crossfire, go to preferences and hit restore to factory defaults, then reboot, reenabled crossfire and see what happens. So i did this. Started up Metro with CFX, never dipped before 12.20V during any firefight, groping walls etc, played for a good hour last night.

So i am stumped here. What was the root cause? How do I prevent it again? Does anyone else think it was just too easy a fix for how hard a time Ive been having with this? Anyway to test it further to make sure it isnt just glitched into working?
You've proven that the system runs fine with one card? What about with two cards?

Yes, works with CFX

Ive also proved that the SSD were not the issue as they system ran perfectly fine with each of the cards seperately and in CFX after I did what my friend suggested.

Sorry, I missed that line doh.

As to why it was behaving weird before, it's a needle in a hay stack really. I've had bad driver installs before but the result of which was usually dismal performance and not total system crashes. Maybe your registry was corrupted due to many driver installs and card insertions and restoring brought it back to a cleaner state?

How long did you test out the cards on their own for? I'm still convinced that the problem is with the ssd's as your problems sound the same as the ones that I had with my vertex 3.

shozz, I played metro for an hour on highest settings with CFX no freeze. Played Moh:A right after that for about 30 mintues highest settings with CFX, and no freeze.

I played Metro for about 30 minutes on high settings on a single card, no freeze.

Again on MoH:A single card for about 45 minutes on single card. No freeze.

I couldnt even get past 5 minutes in metro on lowest settings without it freezing. I would like to consider it fixed, but if you have any tests for me to throw at it, by all means PLEASE give me something.

@TSM, I had the same issue after reformatting from to vista, to windows 7 and back again. All new installs not a restoring process. I doubt that the registry was the issue after so many clean installs and still having the same issue.

My 6970 installed beautifully when I got it because I did it after a fresh OS install.
Still had a couple minor issues with games I actually wanted to play.

In terms of CrossfireX, only had CrossfireX 5770's but that was awhile when AMD had even more issues, so I won't mention those here.

Sounds like you could have a bad CrossfireX bridge...don't know if its been mentioned already I didn't read all posts.

Never been so happy in my life with my GTX.
Everything and I mean EVERYTHING plays smoothly with no hassles, issues or problems. Thats just my story though.

I'm glad to hear you sorted out the issue!

I believe it boils down to remnants of past drivers or current driver settings. I highly doubt it's a hardware failure of any kind considering I was experiencing the exact same issues with my 6950 CFX setup. Random freezing and crashing all the time. It made games a chore rather than an enjoyable experience.

I consider myself an ATi-man and I really want to keep buying their cards but after my last string of problems I finally got fed up and switched to a single GPU solution.
I apologize in advance if this suggestion has already been multiple times (I don't want to read 5 pages of posts):

Put in a different graphics card and see if you get the same problem. I had random lockups due to a motherboard problem, though that wasn't just in games.

Edit: definitely should have read the last page first.
