Throwing around some monitor Upgrade/Orientation ideas, Any suggestions/input ?

Im torn between staying with 120hz panels or mixing in IPS. I saw the quality of some ips displays at a local microcenter and have spent a few weeks trying to decide if 120hz is something I really need anymore. I used to play ALOT of cs 1.6, but now its more just some occasional BC2, Eve & SC2.

Anyways, the monitors in the following pics are the U2311, U2410, & Planar SA2311w (120hz). I do like the idea of a portrait display because I join large voice coms (500+ users) from time to time for Eve, but its not really a requirement.

Also, when I redid this room, I ran cables and mounted 3/4" plywood between the studs where my desk would be, so wall mounts are 100% go w/ alot of flexibility.

Lastly, I thought of doing a 3x 23" 2d surround setup, (cant stand 3d), but I have a couch next to my desk which really only gives me about half of it to work with, and along with my space limitations, I don't really have any need for surround and would probably run them as 3 independent displays. I really prefer/need accessory displays when in-game over some monster resolution.

Any input appreciated. Budget isn't much of a concern, but I don't want displays over 24" and any wall/desk mounts are go.

One thing I noticed in all the different monitor setups I've tried is that when I had one monitor on top of the others, I used it the least. It just feels more natural to put things on the side than up top. So unless you have some specific use in mind for it I wouldn't worry too much about it's quality, and maybe even just use one of your current monitors instead of getting a new one (as long as the viewing angles on them are ok).

As for the portrait thing, couldn't you just use a mount that lets you rotate it whenever you want? Either way, I suggest using a side monitor that's 16:10 or even 4:3 if you want to use it in portrait - a 1200px width is so much more comfortable than 1080px.

I really can't give you any advice you don't already know, as far as 120Hz vs IPS goes. I'd pick IPS each and every time, but that's really up to you. Why don't you just get one U2410 for now and try gaming on it for a few weeks? If you don't like it you can return it or sell it or whatever, and you'll know to stick to 120Hz.

Out of your ideas, I like the last one the best. Though I'd probably put that U2311h that's on top more to the left, so it's only on top of the primary one. It'll be easier to move windows to and from it that way.

My only real concern here is the input lag on the U2410s, along with the fact that it looks like the LED backlit e-IPS u2412 is going to be coming out eventually. Also, that it looks like it will be 16:10.

But with slightly closer input lag numbers to the e-IPS u2311, i think were going to lose some quality. Seems that finding displays that are decent at most everything is next to impossible.

Maybe I should look at the HPs since they seem to do better w/ input lag.
