In need of advice for car audio, please help

Hello Audiophiles!

So my question is the same as the thread title.
I'll start by explaining what I've got, what I want and what I've been told. The guy I'm looking at going to says that he has over 20 years experience and does allot of high end cars. I haven't given the guy my car or a dollar yet.

I've got a late 90's Holden Commodore.
And I've got a JVC Arsenal KD-A615 head unit.
A review for it here is what convinced me to purchase it.
I want high quality crystal clear audio and I don't care so much for thumping bass but I do care about being taken for a ride price wise.
So I've been told not to worry about the back seat speakers and to focus on the front which is understandable.
The guy at the car audio shop recommended
Focal 165V30 6.5" component speaker set - Limited Edition 30th anniversary edition's. He's told me $600, the Focal website says $529... What do you think? I'm pretty set on the Focal brand because I like how high quality it looks.
I insisted on the Focal Solid 4 amp because it received the 2009 inCar award for best amp under 1k however the guy at the shop didn't agree with that amp.

What's making me nervous is that every price he's told me for speakers, amps, subs and head units has been above regular retail price not including installation.

The guy has said that he can do the whole lot...
Focal speakers, Focal amp, doors Dynamat fitted, the doors and boot wired with large gauge cable for future sub installation.
for $1500 if he doesn't install or tune the head deck 'because I'm supplying my own'.
He's said that it's $50 install/tune for the head deck if I buy one off of him or $100 if I supply my own taking the total price to $1600.

Please help with your opinions or professional advice

I wouldn't skimp out on the rear speakers, car audio is really about balance. I've personally never used focal, I've always used JL or Alpine branded stuff. I had four type-s component speakers in my Jeep and will be running the same speakers in my new 350z.

As far as installation costs are concerned, my local guy said 1600 installed for a system that included:

JL Audio Component Speakers @ 75 rms x4
JL Audio Amplifier, 5 channels
JL 10" sub (I don't like booming bass either but a dedicated sub is pretty necessary) w/ custom built enclosure
Alpine head unit
Everything else (speaker wires, fuse, etc)

Sorry for not being specific in my parts list but basically the parts alone come to 1100 and the install is floating around 500.

The tuning thing sounds like a joke considering everyone hears music differently and prefers different highs/lows, I wouldn't give him your money for that.

If you want to know if the guy is good, make him show you the work he's done in the past and make sure he's going to be the one working on your car specifically.

That alone would make me look around for another price.
I mean no one even charges RRP, That´s only recommended retail. On top of that he´s penalizing you for not buying the head unit from him.

First o all, you need a good sub-woofer to balance our your system.

You ever heard a banging system with the sub off and only the high and lows are playing. It feels like you ears are gonna bleed.

Subs are a lot better than they used to be, depending on the brand, they rarely go out. But most installers can put a little device under you head unit to turn the sub-woofer down.

1600 dollars for that system seems ridiculous. I would stick with JL audio, Alpine, and even Pioneer for my system. Kicker is cheaper and has good components and sound just as good. But there subs blow out a lot

I'd mix and match.

I can attest for Pinoneer 6x9 and 6x1/2. My whole system sounded great and I spend $500 dolars all together (i got it installed for free, but for my sytem that insatall at the most in Los Angeles is like @250)

But if you gonna spend 1600 try and get something like the Methos system. JL and Alpine are two of the best.

Try Performance Techkniques and Kicker lows if your looking for performance vs price

Ok I think this is going to be what my new system will be.

Head Unit: JVC Arsenal KD-A615 $180 (Already Purchased)
Front: Focal 165v30 $529
Rear: TBA (probably from the Focal - Access range)
AMP: Focal Solid 4 $499
Doors: Dynamat Door Kit $120
Cables: 4 Gauge complete kit $120
Sub: Solution 25 A1 $799 (amplified 'all-in-one' subwoofer enclosure)

That all seems to be more expensive than necessary. The Dynamat is overpriced by default and the cable price is outrageous to me. Now, I come from the perspective of practically never paying retail price for anything and I would be doing the installation myself, but I don't think it seems right that you'd be getting charged more than retail for the parts. That Solid 4 amp can be purchased for US$400, which is AU$365.

The subwoofer enclosure isn't really a good deal for you, especially considering that its component amp is going to waste because you will have the Solid 4 driving your cabin speakers.

Does your AU$1500+subwoofer total cost include installation? If it does, the price is not great, but not too bad. If it doesn't, I'd do some serious haggling or find another installer because he's already marking up the price of the hardware. Also, you're still missing speakers for rear fill and you're going to have an extra two channels of amplification that you're not going to put to use. You should be able to find ways reduce your total cost by at least $200 either by going with a Solid 2 or a different subwoofer enclosure.

All of the prices listed in my most recent post are all RRP from the Focal Australia website. The cable kit is a branded one with fuses, I searched around the net and I can get them for 90 to 100 but then postage is $15-30 so its not worth the $5 or $10 saving. As for the Dynamat, I'm just going off a couple of Australian retail websites. He said he cuts his own Dynamat to size and not to worry about the price of the kits.
Three reasons why I'm going through this guy rather than buying the stuff myself and getting someone to install it.
1: Postage brings the internet prices back up or close to RRP (thats why I only got the head unit online, I saved $50)
2: The Australian Focal website says that any Focal gear sold from a website could be fake.
3: The three car audio guys I spoke to said they all charge more for installation if I bring in gear that wasn't sold by them.
All in all I think its pretty bull**** how they all go about their business, I'm giving them money to do a job so it shouldn't matter where I get it, if someone else is cheaper they should match it to encourage business on their end.

The installation will be $300 + RRP on all the gear which brings the total up to $2500 on that specs list.

Also just to update, the guy said not to worry about spending $220 on an entry level set of Focal speakers for the rear, just to use some JVC's which are $70 cheaper and he also said I wouldn't notice any difference from the JVC's to the Focals (back seat speakers).

Prices here makes me want to VOMIT.

Speaker wire, RCA, power wire: http://www.knukonceptz.com/

Rear speakers is a NONO unless you want them but I run an SQ comp car and that I left out for many reasons.

Anti vibration/ sound deadening: http://www.raamaudio.com/

Speakers: Clarus C61-2 2-way Speaker System (WILL BLOW YOUR MIND!) http://store.12velectronics.com/prod...r-System-.html

Subwoofer: http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_...roducts_id=818

Amp: http://www.zedaudiocorp.com/index.php/products.html I would go for the Leviathan (use it in my car) to power everything

Wire: You don't need anything more then PURE copper 16 gauge for your front speakers and I would just run pure 8 gauge for subs or no less then 12.

This is what I highly recommend you get.
