Yeah, it's $10-15, depending on where you look. Definitely wouldn't go with the i7 though, it's overkill.

I say get him a 2500k, P8P67 Pro and maybe a GTX570 or 6950/6970
All that at stock will still play most things IMO
Also I'd get an 850W PSU, incase he wants to go Sli/crossfire later!

I'd also say 8GB of Ram! As that does seem to be where Ram usage is going.

I'll just go with the AM3+ board and the phenom 2 X4. Pair it with 4GB rip jaws, and a gtx 460. You'll be set for some time.

Yes but doesn't the 2500 use a 3.3ghz x4 then drop 1 or 2 cores to get the 3.7ghz turbo? the 980 x4 is always 3.7 unless using energy saver. Right now i believe i need clock speed don't I. I will be crossfiring in the future with his rig. Just no tweaking or overclocking.

Honestly you could go either way but you'll get the best bang for your buck from an AMD build. AMD Phenom II X4 965's are going for about 135 bucks on the egg which is a damn good bargain. Pair that up with a reasonable AM3/AM3+ board and you're golden.

You could just as easily go the Intel route with a 2500 but that's another 70 bucks that could be invested elsewhere or instead do a 2100 build which should be similar in price and outperform the AMD x4 lineup in most categories.

Yeah i was going to go with 8gb or ram as it's only like 70 bucks and a 6950 and crossfiring them later.

I think that would be a great idea. Like you said, then you have bulldozer option while still getting good performance from the AM3 lineup.

Here's a performance comparison of the 980 vs a 2400, which is a 3.1 Ghz core. Core clock doesn't matter as much as the efficiency of the architecture.

most reviews i have seen put the 2100 above the phII x4s in gaming performance, which makes the 2100 a viable option as well with its $119 price tag on newegg right now.

but, if your dad wants to play BF3 when it comes out then a 2500k would be the best bet, that way you can pop him up to 4ghz for the breathing room, and it literally takes nothing to get 4ghz on SB.

Given his gaming habits though will he ever need 8GB? I don't come close to using my 6GB even when gaming and multitasking.
