He did not really break into MIT. He was granted access by MIT before. However, they tried to block his IP address and MAC address and allegedly he kept using different computers and changing his MAC address.

From what I understand, he was allowed to read the articles but he was not allowed to download the entire database. JSTOR wanted to sell access the articles in a journal for profit.

I am missing a link in reconciling why he has beef at all.

You typically have to pay for access to a journal subscription, or pay taxes to a county where you can get a library card and get access to (probably a very limited section) journals.

From what I can see, they are offering a service. I'm not sure if I can completely understand his beef with this system, as he wouldn't have access to jack if they didn't aggregate and digitize it in the first place, which probably took time and money.

I might be misunderstanding general access to journals like this.
