4870x2 Overheating Issues

Thread Starter
So as you already know, i have an ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2.When I'm not playing any games and just surfing the internet, its temperature is at 69-70 degrees celsius with the fans at 100%.

When I'm playing League of Legends, the temperature gets to 100-120 degrees.
Sometimes when I don't keep track of the temperature my PC just shuts down.
I even have a fan on the side panel to help cool my card. I really need a solution to this.

I wouldn't mind buying a new card so please give me some suggestions.

Thanks

Have you ever disassembled the card and cleaned the heatsink out / reapplied new TIM to it? Most likely, doing that will help your temps out a lot and give you more time with that card before you have to upgrade. I would also recommend replacing any thermal pads that are present as well.

Edit: Just noticed that this is your first post! Welcome to OCN!!

Thank you for the welcome, and I have no idea how to clean out the heat sink and thermal pads, all I've done is clean the dust out of the fan and my card is getting pretty old so do you have any suggestions for a new ATI/AMD card?

Cool well, if you were looking to get some experience in disassembling the card, you could try YouTube. I'm sure that there are plenty of submissions on it. Not very hard if you inclined to try.

I would look at the 6970's if I were you. You will gain Dx11 and probably a tad bit of performance over your current card. I haven't done any comparison's on performance myself, but I have owned two 4870x2's before and they were a blast. Let me know what you think.

All you need to do is remove the cover to gain full access to the heat sink fins. You should never see those kind of temps on a 4870x2 even if the fan speed was set between 30-40% while gaming. Mine has never gone above upper 60's with the fan @ 70%. As far as suggestions go...5870 or 6970.

Did a search on my local store and its around 300 bucks in Australia. I remember from some website that the 5870 is a bit better than the 4870x2 so the 6970 should beat my current card. I'll also look into the YouTube thing, thanks.

Well I've had it since 2008 so I think cleaning it up might help.

The problem is that they do run really hot. Mine was idling at 70 and would load at 100, which is fine for that card. However 120 will do some serious damage if the auto shutdown didn't kick in.

There's really not much you can do other than replace the TIM or go to water cooling.

You won't really notice anything going from a 4870x2 to a 6970, but just for the heat reduction, I would say it is worth the investment.

Thanks man, I guess I'll buy the 6970 and get Battlefield 3 on PC instead of PS3.

I also have a problem with when I turn on my PC, it freezes a lot at the motherboard introduction screen, then after about 3 minutes the screen goes black. I have to keep turning my PC off and on until I'm lucky and it logs on. I don't know what the problem is but I think it's my graphics card because the fans don't run on max until I'm in the OS. o_O
