Yes. I think people forget how slow everyones internet was back then (so attachments of any size were rare), and how little space email takes up. I can't think of a single instance of anyone I know having to delete email from their hotmail or yahoo account to free up space.
...and if you didn't login within 30 days they deleted all of your mail.
My current email is 28% full of 7gb.
I think many people (especially the teenagers here) don't know what a difference google has made. They upped the ante and the game.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think this news pertains mainly to the googlelabs.com labs projects and the 20% time google employees are allowed to spend on them specifically.

I will be very surprised if they nix many of the functions in gmail that labs enables.
