Help me decide my upgrade

Thread Starter
Here is my current setup, a pre-built PC from 2008(?)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Currently I am unhappy with the speed of my CPU and would like to overclock. However the crappy motherboard that is in the computer currently has a locked BIOS and cannot be overclocked. Also the RAM, while there is enough, is slow as well and when I upgrade the motherboard I would also upgrade the RAM.

So here are the options I was looking at:

Option 1: Keep Q9400, upgrade the motherboard and DDR2 RAM

Option 2: Keep Q9400, upgrade the motherboard and get DDR3 Ram

Option 3: Wait until I graduate and have a job and earn enough money to purchase a $5000 kick ass system (probably not for 2+ years)

I've been leaning towards Option 2 because when I do upgrade I can potentially use the DDR3 ram modules in my new system. Basically I want your guys' options on how long I can stay with the Q9400, and if it is worth upgrading to potentially extend that period. I've been looking at obtaining a used UD3P, and then getting some fast RAM.

Another thing, depending on how quickly my GTX460 becomes obsolete I might also look into SLIing two of them, which I understand is possible with the UD3P if you mod it.

Sorry for the long post, thanks for the help!

keep the Q9400, overclock it and you can also buy another GPU card, but you need to verify if your power supply support all that power consumption. I hope your CPU won't bottleneck your Graphic Cards. You'll have to learn to overclock, have you overclocked before? UD3P is great for learning.

You're pretty good, actually. I would wait till the future to build that 5000 system.

get the UDP3 and some decent DDR2 ram and your good to go for a while, Alternatively, look at DFI Lanparty boards, if your looking to SLI.

I have not overclocked a CPU before, my GPU is OC'd but I'm assuming that the CPU OC is nothing like it.

On a more general note, how do I go about choosing RAM so that it matches my CPU?

Btw, my time frame is around Thanksgiving. My family celebrates Christmas at that time so I can get them to get me the CPU coolers/case fans/RAM.

Option 1:

Get yourself a replacement Mobo, keep your 6GB of RAM, get a Hyper 212+ and OC that CPU to 3.5-3.7GHz.
It'll be a nice increase in performance, closing the gap between it and the 2500k in games at 1080p.

Two years is a looong arse wait, that CPU was born nearly 3 years ago now, games are finally utilizing Quads now, so you should be able to pull it off.
I'd also suggest maybe picking up a Mobo with SLI ability, and pick up a second cheap 460 later in the year in our For Sale section (or whenever you have enough Rep) and truly make the most of your rig for the 2+ years it's gotta make you happy for.

BTW, 5k is too much IMO, and just bragging for the sake of wasting money.
Build a cracking rig for less, keep the rest in the bank for upgrades down the line, like adding a second top-of-the-line GPU, and women.

I think you are set with a 4 core CPU for now (And quite the high end one) . I don't think a switch would be worth it right now! Get more money and wait..

I was stuck with a Core 2 Duo for almost 4 years and had the opportunity to switch to a Quad, or even to an i7 when it first came out but I held it and now built a whole new PC from ground up with Sandy Bridge which is great! I say wait!

There was a great test someone did here at OCN I'm sure, using newer benches and games, and I had a site on my favourites, but it's n a different Hard Drive, so for now see here:-

http://www.thebuzzmedia.com/ddr2-800...-speed-matter/

They might be old games, but gaming-wise, the Latency vs Frequency, there won't be a huge difference between say DDR2 800 CL4 and DDR3 1600 CL8 or whatever.
Other area's of course, the greater Bandwidth will be significant, gaming not so much.
