XFire gpu on mobo

If I plan on doing XFire with a mobo for top performance should I go with a PCI express (x16, x16) or (x16, x8) there is almost a $200 difference is why I'm asking, money isn't the problem I just don't want to spend that much for a small performance bump.

There isnt any noticeable difference between 16x/16x or 16x/8x.
