Does Nvidia have the best image quality?

Thread Starter
Hi,

I've been reading up on building a pc and I've learned a lot over the last few days. Thanks guys.

Now I just neeed to decide on a card. I've readd some benchmark and the performance seems similar, but I've seen a few people post that Nvidia hs the best image quality. Is this true? If so, why is AMD the most popular?

Price?

Thanks.

Your monitor is more important than AMD/Nvidia. Both are great. I've used both in the past and will probably use both in the future. It just depends on what I feel is the best deal at that particular time when I'm buying a new card.

If you want good image quality buy a nice monitor.

Nvidia supposedly has better image quality, but the difference is subtle, not something you would notice if you weren't looking for it. The biggest thing that keeps me coming back to nvidia is the driver support.

Your GPU wont give you any better visuals.. Nvidia will offer better DX11, Tesselation and 3D performance though.. If you want Surround/Eyefinity though, AMD is way better..

I would not say AMD is the most popular nor would I say Nvidia,Both are great gpu's.To be honest I am a Nvidia guy only for the Folding I do and the sometime problems AMD has with drivers.Nvidia has a few problems with drivers too but you hear more from the AMD guys. The best way to make a choice of which is best for you is to figure out what you want your system to do and have a budget. Then ask us guys for the choices you have.

I just switched a month ago from a GTX 570 to a Radeon 6970 (for the extra VRAM) and have noticed no difference in image quality. I had owned all Nvidia cards until this point.

However, like the poster above me states, the monitor makes a much bigger difference. Ignoring the size, the color accuracy is much better with my sig screen (IPS) compared to the 1080p Samsung (TN) I had previously owned.

EDIT:

AMD drivers have some different options and they take a little bit of effort to configure (again this is my first AMD card), but all the horror stories I have read on the net about AMD drivers sucking have been unfounded (so far ).

My GTX580 works better than any card I have ever used before. In the past I have used ATI, and thought highly of them as well.
Nvidia does have great driver support. I do like my PNY GTX580. It works very well in image quality, and gaming performance.

There was debate about this in a thread many months ago, and someone, who seemed pretty knowledgeable about the subject with his profession, said that ATI rendered colors a bit more accurately.

This is of course assuming the monitor is calibrated properly with both. Colors will of course be more accurate with a calibrated monitor and an Nvidia card than a monitor that isn't calibrated with an ATI card.

That being said, I believe the difference is negligible as far as 99% of users are concerned.

Your monitor choice is more important. If it sucks then you will always have less than good visuals. Fwiw, I recommend Radeon cards over nVidia. The driver problem myth is a myth.
