Those 4 screws holding the blue thing on are the "4-point connection schemes for most all of these"

OK so I just tried to put the stock intel HSF from my core i-7 chip onto my AM3 motherboard but the holes on the motherboard are spaced differently than the mount points on the intel HSF. I'm guessing now that the HSF mounting schemes are in fact different between core i7 and AM3.

Just get a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 or Cooler Master Vortex Plus. Both are cheap, easy to install (uses existing stock retention bracket) but its not the best if your planning on mass over clocking but its still way more quite then the stock piece of junk

Sorry to have neglected this thread for so long, but the weather cooled off and the problem went away. It's 80 degrees today and the fan is being SUPER loud. Gotta replace it!

Remember,
* my case is small http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811154094 - only 7.2 inches deep (183mm) on the *outside*
* mobo has AMD mounting scheme for HSF: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128440

I'm thinking one of these two:
Cooler Master Hyper N 520
Cooler Master Vortex Plus

Thoughts / warnings welcome.

If they still made the OCZ Vendetta2 I'd say get one of those - they use the existing AMD clip design. Unfortunately they've all gone EOL.

Basically any $20-$30 heatsink/fan which is specified to work with Socket AM2 or higher will work.

OK so I ended up getting COOLER MASTER Hyper N 520 RR-920-N520-GP. When it arrived it looked pretty large but it fits tidily in my cheap micro atx case. I had to remove the quick-release heat sink mount which meant getting behind the mobo but this was quite easily accomplished by just removing the other side panel of the case.

Now that it's installed, it appears to be very very quiet. As the box in question is running Ubuntu linux, I'm not sure how to check temperatures. Any thoughts?

A proxy measure is to look in the BIOS just after about 5 min of memtest86+.The CPU temp readout should be fairly reasonable.
