[ENG]Hitachi announces high-res 4.5-inch IPS display for smartphones with improved gl

There's still no word as to when it might actually land in some phones, but it looks like glasses-free 3D could soon see some improvements courtesy of Hitachi's latest 4.5-inch IPS display. Not only does it boast a high 1280 x 720 resolution, but it uses a less common lenticular lens approach instead of the parallax barrier method used by the likes of the Nintendo 3DS and HTC EVO 3D. According to Hitachi, that allows for some much 3D brighter images than other displays (470 cd/m2, specifically), and images that are actually brighter in 3D mode than in 2D mode. Here's hoping Hitachi shows off a bit more than the image above before too long.

I don't care about the 3D part, but that resolution on a screen that size

Yea... so unless I'm wrong, thats a lower pixel density than the iPhone 4G has... just a larger screen?

I've been waiting for a phone with a 720p screen, or a small tablet (7 inches or so) with a 1080p screen, for my next mobile device. I don't know why everyone's been copying Apple with their stupid "qHD" crap. I want something that'll play my HD videos at an HD resolution, without having to output it to an external screen.

This screen sounds fantastic, but let's wait and see how it looks!

I'm not arguing that... Just commenting on the overall density of the pixels. I do think thats a much more viable native resolution than what the iPhone 4G's retina display will have you using.

If my math is right the pixel density should be 326.36 ppi which is about the same as the iphone 4's screen.

My mistake... you are right. Equal pixel density.

I'm a rocket scientist, not an electrical engineer Besides, I already use a UMPC with a 1280x800 5.6" screen, which I've had for a year now. I'm gonna keep using my dumb phone for calls until a smartphone can equal or better my pocketable netbook.

And I just think this should have been done by now. It's just a larger version of the Retina display, and imo 3.5 inches isn't big enough (inb4 that's what she said).
