Mods please close/delete thread, I posted this in air cooling and got my answers. Thanks.

Update 8/6/2011

I need advice on the design for cooling. Here is the design thus far. I need to get moving on this soon, I plan to buy the wood and cut within two days. Also keep in mind that I'm no architect or engineer of any sort, so if my design looks flawed, that's to be expected. Also, the left monitor is the size of a Dell U3011, so you can gauge how large the desk will be (7ft long x 30" deep x 32" height).

Probably should have this moved into worklogs, but I don't know how much I plan to update, if I do much of the work in one straight shot.

Two pictures with the side panel off:

Picture with side panels back on and front panel off:

The two red dots show where the left side of the mobo will be oriented, with the peripherals plugged facing the left side of the desk (not cutting into the wood).

I plan to have upper left side panel be removable with dowels and cabinet magnets to hold it in place. Also, the hole in the top of the desk will have a piece of clear plexi which will serve two purposes: visual window in, and easy access to motherboard and components.

I need help deciding on intake cooling. I already plan to exhaust the air from the back side of the compartment (the piece of wood that is recessed will have fan holes cut in it).

I was thinking about doing something like this:

Those two images are just rough, and aren't even close to an accurate fan size. I just did it quickly to illustrate the idea. I was thinking of doing that idea above, for the right side (side with the 24pin and hard drive connectors) as well with an air hole cut in a similar fashion. I'd probably have two fans blowing from the "bottom" side of the mobo, and two from the "right" side.

Does this seem like a viable route for good airflow, or does anybody have a better idea? I don't really want to cut fan holes in the sides of the desk fronts either.

I think if you had the fans placed in good positions for good airflow it would do fine. I've done a few mods similar to what you are describing. It's a fun project, and I say go for it. Looking forward to progress if you decide to go forward with it

I just don't want to spend hours drawing the thing in Sketchup, buy all the materials and build the dang thing if my CPU and video card temps end up going up by 20C.

I really don't want to mess with water cooling either. Too expensive.

Maybe all the horror stories were from people that just used passive cooling.. who knows.

Ahh well, I have nothing better to do so I'll mess around in Sketchup a bit and post pics here.
