[BF3Blog] 50 leaked Battlefield 3 alpha screenshots - Page 11

I agree with you to a point, I'm more or less bored with the genre because of CoD. Twitch games are getting old, and yes BF has always been about great team gameplay. BC2 was pretty fun but not perfect. There is still something missing, I didn't get that feeling from the desert combat days. Sure 1942 was very glitchy and by today's standards considered broken. But at the time I was completely blown away by it, I mastered the art of helicopter piloting. This was a very steep learning curve for that game. Now any jackass can pilot one.

I dunno, there are aspects about the new BF game I can get into. I like that there seems to be a slow burn aspect. I played BF2 a ton as well, I'm just not going to hold my breath.

I just want that same feeling back from Desert combat. Rolling with a convoy of dune buggies on el alamein, with a chopper and A10 as air support. Maybe it was the pizza rolls, cold beer, and lan party fun that I miss.

I'm just tired of the genre as a whole. Maybe they will perfect the genre, maybe it will be fun. I'll be there to try it, sure. I'm just tired of modern military fps games. What about the trenches of WWI?

I'm just tired of dropping 60 bucks on shooters that I lose interest in.

But change just for the sake of change isn't necessarily good. WW1 is a bad choice IMO. It'd work well for a turn based strategy game, but if you were to actually catch the feeling of WW1 in an FPS game, you'd have to have players waiting for ages before attacking and they'd have to protect against gas attacks (their own included). Also, sickness and wet feet. It's not appealing to the general population (or most others for that matter). And how do you create a MP around that? It might be doable, but it's not where the money lies (especially when even "hardcore" gamers think the idea is silly and boring). It's too niche.

Then again there can niches for these sorts of ideas. I for one loved Battlegrounds 2, the HL2 Revolutionary War mod. Essentially it's a bunch of people lining up a few hundreds yards apart, firing their inaccurate rifles, and then running at each other with bayonets. It doesn't sound like much fun, but it's a unique experience!

Anyways, back to the topic, I do agree that as far as FPS games go, WWII and modern warfare are two of the most interesting "sub-genres". WWII has that certain historical importance to it. It wasn't too long ago, and it certainly changed the world as we know it. Modern Warfare, on the other hand, is full of secret technologies and various futuristic ideas that spice things up. I don't see either going away any time soon. WWII games may have been on the decline for a while, but Red Orchestra 2 promises to be pretty amazing.

I think you could create a very suspenseful WWI shooter. Trench warfare! There is much more to it than just blindly charging, there are tactics, flanks, rushing to defalade. And the rifles were hardly innacurate. The k98 was used up through WWII, and the 1903 springfield was utilized by snipers through korea and vietnam. Maxxum machine guns, BARs. It could be a very awesome shooter.

In video games, suspense = boring. Waiting in a trench for hours>days>months does not translate into exciting gameplay. Don't get me wrong, I'm fascinated by all facets of warfare, but certain things just don't work in the medium. There might be a small market for WWI aficionados who specifically want such a unique game, but it'll never work as a market title. Leave those kind of games to the third party mod teams.
